The playtest for Electronic Arts’ (EA) “Skate” game has broken the record for the largest playtest sign-up ever in EA’s history. This year has been particularly exciting for lovers of old-school skateboarding games, as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 were released following months of speculation, and EA is reviving its popular “Skate” series. Although the full early access phase for “Skate” doesn’t start until late 2025, it’s already generating a lot of buzz.
The most recent mainline “Skate” game was released 15 years ago, which means fans have had a lot of time to build up anticipation and high hopes for the future. Developer Full Circle seems assured they can meet these expectations, with Jeff Seamster, Head of Creative, stating that the upcoming “Skate” remake feels and performs better than any game in the series to date. These are quite bold statements, but it appears many gamers are intrigued enough by the potential to push the game towards greatness.
As a passionate gamer, I was thrilled to learn on July 25th from EA’s official game forum that over 1 million gamers like me had signed up for the exclusive playtest of Skate. This number surpasses any other EA playtest in history, which is an incredible feat given the company’s extensive collection of games and massive presence in the gaming industry.
However, I can’t ignore the controversy surrounding the inclusion of microtransactions in the Skate reboot. While it’s not entirely unexpected for a free-to-play live service game like this one, the early appearance of these transactions has left some fans concerned, myself included. Yet, despite this, the overwhelming interest in the game remains undeniable.
The Skate Playtest Has Drawn Over 1 Million People
The article further explained that Electronic Arts (EA) is still extending playtest invitations to individuals who have registered. In early 2025, the Skate playtest was broadened to accommodate console players, and since then, the closed alpha has been expanding steadily. EA continues to send out daily invites on weekdays, so those who’ve signed up but haven’t received anything should keep an eye on their inboxes as a code might arrive soon. However, the team mentioned that all invitations will be sent out by the end of July, so time is running short for those wanting to contribute to development at this stage.
Those who didn’t get a chance to try out the game initially can anticipate another opportunity as Skate reboot is set for early access release towards the end of 2025. This means the time to play the game won’t stretch too far. At first, the game will not have an offline mode, but there’s a possibility that might change in the future.
