Over the past few years, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has been experiencing a remarkable resurgence, thanks to the box office triumphs of Paramount’s live-action films and popular titles like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations. In fact, 2024 was an exceptional year for Shadow the Hedgehog, with starring roles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and his own storyline in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

2024 is being referred to by Sega as “the Year of Shadow,” reflecting the character’s heightened prominence in their upcoming releases. The latest DLC for Sonic X Shadow Generations includes content based on the Sonic 3 movie, featuring a fresh model and Keanu Reeves reprising his role from the film as Shadow. Although the Game Awards 2024 didn’t showcase much of the Sonic franchise, it did unveil a teaser trailer for an upcoming game, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which includes the famous anti-hero hedgehog.

In a quick sneak peek for the game “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds”, we witness Shadow the character opening a garage, subsequently starting a sleek black and red vehicle. After climbing into the driver’s seat, he speeds away with screeching tires, passing through a vibrant portal activated by a ring. The exact launch date for this Sonic-themed racing offshoot has yet to be announced beyond “Coming Soon”. However, it is expected to drop on all modern gaming devices such as PC, Switch, and both versions of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. As reported by Geoff Keighley at The Game Awards, the game is slated for release in 2025.
