I’m so excited! Paramount just announced they’re making another Sonic the Hedgehog movie, planned for December 2028! And if that wasn’t enough, we’re also getting Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in March 2027. Seriously, this is amazing news for any Sonic fan like me!
The Sonic the Hedgehog movies, which started in 2020, have become surprisingly popular with both longtime fans and new audiences. Even though the first look at Sonic’s design received criticism, Paramount successfully turned the series into a major box office success. The newest film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, has earned over $492 million, making it the third highest-grossing movie based on a video game – following only ‘A Minecraft Movie’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’. It appears the filmmakers have plenty more stories to tell in the Sonic universe, even after the planned fourth movie.
Untitled Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Set to Release on December 22nd, 2028
Variety reports that Paramount has announced release dates for a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and another Sonic the Hedgehog film, slated for December 22, 2028. While the Sonic movie is described as a “Sonic Universe Event Film,” it’s not yet known if it will be a spin-off or what that spin-off might involve. Although Paramount+ already released the “Knuckles” show as a spin-off, this new Sonic film will be a theatrical release. It’s also unclear who will direct or produce, as Neal H. Moritz is now focusing on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.
It’s exciting to think about what the next Sonic movie could be! Fans are hoping for stories focusing on characters like Team Chaotix and Shadow, and that might be what’s in the works. With Amy and Metal Sonic appearing at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a spin-off movie based on those characters is also a possibility. No matter what, more Sonic content is always welcome, and Paramount seems to be doing a great job with the franchise so far.
