New StarCraft Shooter In Development At Blizzard

As a longtime fan who’s seen the highs and lows of Blizzard Entertainment, I find myself both excited and apprehensive about their new StarCraft shooter project. On one hand, I’ve been eagerly awaiting a return to the StarCraft universe in a fresh, innovative way. On the other hand, I can’t help but remember the fate of previous attempts like StarCraft Ghost and Project Ares.

It appears that Blizzard Entertainment is developing a fresh StarCraft shooter again, as per Jason Schreier’s latest book, “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment”. This new game is being crafted under the guidance of a team headed by Dan Hay, who previously led Far Cry projects.

Schreier, who appeared on a recent IGN podcast, spoke about the game and is passage from the book.

During a conversation with Ryan McCaffrey, Schreier was inquired if the game was still ongoing or if it might have been called off already. In response, Schreier indicated that if it wasn’t cancelled, considering Blizzard’s history with StarCraft shooters isn’t promising.

He added that, as far as he knew, it was still in development while stating that “StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard”.

Previously, Blizzard has ventured into this genre with StarCraft Ghost and Project Ares, both of which were met with excitement but ultimately scrapped. StarCraft Ghost was in development during the early-to-mid 2000s, while Project Ares, a first-person shooter, was being developed for at least two years before its cancellation in 2019. This new StarCraft shooter is not Blizzard’s first attempt to explore this path.

Regarding the current standings in game development, Hay is known for contributing to titles like Far Cry 3-6, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, 007 Nightfire, and others. Prior to this, he was engaged with Blizzard’s project Odyssey, which unfortunately got cancelled in January following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. As per his website, Hay hasn’t shipped a game at Blizzard up until now.
