A free upgrade to Stardew Valley for the Switch 2 was unexpectedly released on Christmas Day for players who already own the game on the original Switch. While the upgrade was originally planned for fall 2025, it arrived much earlier in the winter season.
Released in 2016, Stardew Valley has become incredibly popular, selling over 41 million copies worldwide by late 2024. Its lasting success is likely due to its appealing pixel art, ongoing updates even years after its initial release, and availability on most gaming platforms. Updates have added new in-game events, like festivals, and improved how the game works overall.
Stardew Valley Surprises Switch 2 Users With A Christmas Day Gift
Fans who own Stardew Valley on the Nintendo Switch can now get a free upgrade to the Switch 2 version, starting Christmas Day on the Nintendo eShop. For new players, Stardew Valley on Switch 2 costs $14.99 – the same price as the original. The Switch 2 version requires a bit more storage space (2.3 GB compared to 1.6 GB for the original). After updating the game and downloading a small 3 MB patch, the Switch 2 edition will replace the original on your console. Good news for existing players: your save data will transfer, so you can continue your farm right where you left off!
The upgrade of Stardew Valley for the Switch 2 was originally scheduled for fall 2025, but its release on Christmas Day was a pleasant surprise for players. While the Switch 2 version doesn’t improve the game’s graphics or speed, it does offer some new features. These include the ability to play with a mouse using the Joy-Con 2 controllers, local split-screen co-op for up to four players, and online multiplayer for up to eight players through Nintendo Switch Online. A feature called GameShare also lets up to three nearby Switch or Switch 2 consoles join a local co-op game, even if they don’t own a copy – though the host Switch 2 console needs to purchase and download the Switch 2 version first.
What’s Next For Stardew Valley?
If you’re excited to hear about what’s coming in Stardew Valley‘s 10th anniversary celebration, you’ll need to be patient. While the 1.7 update is still being worked on, the game’s creator, Eric Barone (known as ConcernedApe), hasn’t shared many specifics yet. He mentioned in September that he wants to make sure the update is truly ready before revealing too much. He also wants to avoid the long, staggered release that happened with the 1.6 update, which came out on PC in March 2024 but didn’t reach consoles and mobile devices until eight months later.
The popular indie game Among Us is teaming up with Stardew Valley for a special, limited-time event. Among Us players can earn Stardew Valleythemed outfits and items – like those inspired by Abigail, Sebastian, and Lewis – by completing the Stardew Valley Cosmicube before February 18, 2026. With Stardew Valley* also launching on the Switch 2 around Christmas, it’s clear the game continues to thrive.
