It’s been ten years since Valve stopped making the Steam Controller, and talk of a new version is starting up again. A trusted source says they have details about what the updated controller might look like, and that Valve plans to announce it publicly soon, though they haven’t given a specific date yet.
There’s been a lot of talk about new hardware from Valve related to Steam for 2025. In addition to rumors of a wireless VR headset potentially named “Steam Frame,” it looks like Valve might also be unveiling an updated Steam Controller. The new controller is expected to take design cues from the successful Steam Deck.
Leaked Steam Controller Features Chunky Design, Several Key Features
Brad Lynch, a source familiar with Valve’s plans, recently shared details about a new Steam Controller expected in 2024. He posted an image on Twitter, but clarified it wasn’t an actual photo of the controller. Instead, it’s an AI-created rendering based on a prototype he’s seen firsthand. The image depicts a sizable, robust controller featuring two joysticks, a central Steam button, and dual trackpads – design elements clearly influenced by the Steam Deck.
People on Twitter immediately noticed the new Steam Controller’s resemblance to the original Xbox’s large “Duke” controller. Reactions were mixed – some liked that it felt similar to the Steam Deck, while others thought it was too bulky or didn’t like the touchpads. When asked about an official reveal of the new design, Valve designer Lawrence Yang said they were “extremely close” to sharing it. Yang also explained the controller can sense how far your hands are from the grips using sensors, a feature also found in the updated Steam Deck. He clarified this isn’t full finger tracking, but a simpler version that could be used for motion controls.
Valve stopped making the original Steam Controller just over five years ago, and talk of a new version started about a year ago. If recent claims are accurate, both the new controller and the SteamVR headset could be available as early as the 2025 holiday season. This means the upgraded Steam Controller could be a popular gift for gamers this Christmas.
