New Steam Game Has Serious Morrowind Vibes

A new game called Queen’s Domain, coming to Steam, strongly resembles the classic game Morrowind, and that’s a good thing. While it doesn’t have a release date yet, Queen’s Domain is already generating excitement with its beautiful retro-fantasy style. It’s clearly inspired by Morrowind, but it’s also forging its own unique path.

Freshly Baked Games, the developer of Queen’s Domain, previously released a well-received game called The New Flesh. The New Flesh was a free-to-play exploration game featuring music by the band Red Vox, and it earned “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam. Both games share a similar retro visual style, though The New Flesh was set in a gritty, contemporary world, while Queen’s Domain takes place in a fantasy setting. It’s impressive that this new studio is already trying out different types of games and establishing a distinct look so early on. Only time will tell if Queen’s Domain will become as popular with players as The New Flesh did.

Queen’s Domain Looks Like a Modern Morrowind, and You Can Play the Demo Right Now

Players can now visit the Steam page to learn more about Queen’s Domain. The game, created by Freshly Baked Games, is a retro-style action RPG with challenging combat and a focus on exploring the game world. You’ll take on the role of a character searching for their missing father on the Isle of Neasied, a mysterious island where dark forces are gathering and secrets are hidden. According to the developers, this interconnected island offers dozens of hours of adventure and exploration.

In Queen’s Domain, players will discover a huge arsenal of over 50 melee weapons and more than 20 different throwing weapons, all of which can be upgraded. Combat is versatile, and players can also unlock a special ability with the Legendary Holy Sword Endu, letting them jump between platforms. This unique movement system will be a key feature of the game, helping it offer a fresh experience.

This game draws heavy inspiration from classic role-playing games. Visually, it strongly resembles Morrowind with its retro-fantasy style, but improved lighting gives it a more modern look. The combat feels similar to Morrowind as well – a bit rough around the edges, which adds to the old-school feel. It features over 100 different enemies and challenging bosses, and the developer promises tough, demanding combat, suggesting a touch of *Soulslike difficulty. Like many RPGs, you’ll gain experience, level up your character, and improve your stats by finding and eating food throughout the game world.

The release date for Queen’s Domain is currently unknown. Freshly Baked Games hasn’t announced when the game will be available, or if it will first launch as an Early Access title to get player feedback. The developer says Queen’s Domain has been in development since 2023, meaning it’s been a long process. If you’re eager to try it out, a free demo is available on Steam now. Freshly Baked Games says the demo lets you play through about the first hour of the game.
