I’ve been checking out this new game coming to Steam called The God Slayer, and it looks seriously cool. It’s giving me major Black Myth: Wukong vibes, but with a bit of that awesome bending action from Avatar: The Last Airbender thrown in. The developers, Pathea Games, actually made My Time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock, so they’re known for making really relaxing and enjoyable life sim games – which is kinda surprising to see them tackling something like this, but I’m definitely excited!
It seems The God Slayer is the most ambitious game developed by this Chinese studio so far. People are already drawing comparisons to popular titles like Black Myth: Wukong, and highly-regarded anime such as Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The God Slayer Gameplay and Story Features
- Open-world map
- Role-playing aspects
- Eastern-inspired steampunk setting
- Element-based martial arts combats
- Sandbox aspects
- Single-player campaign
The God Slayer Is Another Ambitious Chinese Game
Black Myth: Wukong Seems to Have Inspired Its Setting and Story
Pathea Games, the Chinese developer behind the upcoming game The God Slayer, describes it as taking place in a fantastical kingdom inspired by Eastern culture, ruled by powerful gods known as Celestials. This immediately brings to mind Black Myth: Wukong, another popular game with a similar Eastern setting and gods as key adversaries.
A new seven-minute gameplay clip of The God Slayer reveals a variety of enemies, including a huge, celestial creature similar to those seen in Black Myth: Wukong, like The Four Heavenly Kings. The game’s story, which focuses on a rebellion against oppressive, god-like beings, also shares similarities with the narrative of Wukong.
Both games share common ground as Chinese-developed titles inspired by mythology. The God Slayer and Black Myth: Wukong are both fantasy role-playing games, but they differ in gameplay. Black Myth: Wukong is more linear, while the upcoming God Slayer will be an open-world game with more freedom and sandbox-style elements.

Core Combat Mechanics in The God Slayer Seem Straight Out of Avatar: The Last Airbender
The God Slayer is an action RPG focused on exciting combat. Early looks suggest battles will combine martial arts with elemental powers, similar to what you see in the anime Avatar: The Last Airbender. Players will become Elemancers, characters who can wield and control five different elements – fire, water, wood, metal, and earth.
The developer’s gameplay video showcases the main character wielding various powers – setting enemies ablaze, flooding them with water, stunning them with rocks, and using surrounding wood to deflect attacks. These abilities, particularly the use of fire, water, and earth, strongly recall the anime series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which also features those three elements as central to its world.

Although The God Slayer initially appears to blend elements from Black Myth: Wukong and Avatar: The Last Airbender, it’s introducing gameplay concepts that could set it apart as a truly unique action RPG. The game’s combat system, based on different elements, isn’t just about using fire, water, earth, and air – these elements interact with each other in interesting ways. For instance, the developers at Pathea Games explain that water can be changed into ice or steam depending on the player’s abilities.
The game also features a large, open world filled with different groups players can encounter. The developer says you’ll be able to talk to many characters and experience unique conversations that reveal the game’s story and hidden secrets.

It’s still too early to know exactly when the game will be released. It was just announced and the Steam page went live on December 5th. While Pathea Games hasn’t announced a release date, and considering how large and complex the game seems to be, it will likely take some time. However, because the developers have already shown a substantial gameplay demo, many fans believe it could be released within the next one or two years.
