New Steam Game is Like a Tactical Twist on Classic Resident Evil

Horror games are incredibly popular right now, with big franchises like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space, and Fatal Frame all making comebacks. Not only are we seeing lots of new releases from major developers, but indie games like Vultures – Scavengers of Death are also bringing back the classic style of horror gaming. Vultures – Scavengers of Death is set to launch on PC via Steam in early 2026, and it aims to capture the feel of the original Resident Evil while also incorporating unique elements inspired by strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics.

The term “survival horror” is often associated with the original Resident Evil game from 1996, but many believe earlier titles like Haunted House (1982), Sweet Home (1989), and Alone in the Dark (1992) first established key elements of the genre. Over the years, horror games have continued to evolve, introducing innovative gameplay mechanics. Features like the camera-based ghost hunting in Fatal Frame and the sanity meter in Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem have become particularly well-known and have been copied in many other games, both large and small. Vultures – Scavengers of Death aims to honor the legacy of classic survival horror while also incorporating a unique twist inspired by turn-based RPGs.

Vultures – Scavengers of Death Blends Resident Evil Horror with Final Fantasy Tactics Gameplay

I’m really excited about Vultures – Scavengers of Death! It’s a tactical survival horror game that throws you into this awesome 90s horror-inspired world. You play as part of the VULTURES, and the goal is to scavenge for supplies and info in a ruined city – Salento Valley – to try and find a cure for this global plague. You get to pick from a team of VULTURES agents, each with their own fighting style and weapons. The missions are all about sneaking in, planning your moves, and then using turn-based combat – it reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics. You can go for precise shots to take enemies down quickly, or weaken them so you can escape. It’s all about using different strategies to get the job done and, ultimately, find that cure!

Simply fighting enemies won’t be enough to survive the infection in Vultures – Scavengers of Death. Players must also find relics, decode messages, and collect items to uncover a way to live. The mutated creatures and terrifying monsters roaming the ruined Salento Valley will become increasingly difficult to defeat, making every decision a matter of life or death. With graphics inspired by PS1 survival horror and gameplay blending multiple retro genres, Vultures – Scavengers of Death is available to wishlist on Steam now.

Recently, many new horror games with an old-school style have become very popular, likely because players enjoy the feeling of nostalgia combined with fresh stories. Developers like Puppet Combo and Chilla’s Art have consistently demonstrated that basic graphics, combined with strong narratives and a creepy atmosphere, can be incredibly successful.
