New Steam Game Is Like Hades Meets Final Fantasy Tactics

Astral Throne 2: Age of the Phoenix is a new strategy RPG on Steam that combines elements of roguelites with grid-based and turn-based combat, and features meta-progression between runs. It feels like a mix of the games Hades and Final Fantasy Tactics in terms of its story and gameplay.

Zero Sun Games, a studio based in Ontario, Canada, recently released Age of the Phoenix, a follow-up to last year’s Astral Throne. Astral Throne, which debuted on Steam in February 2025, didn’t become a huge commercial hit, but it was very popular with strategy RPG players and received excellent reviews. OpenCritic gives it a “Mighty” rating, with an average score of 84 and a 100% recommendation rate, ranking it among the top 7% of all games on the platform.

Astral Throne 2 Announced, Now Available for Steam Wishlists

I was so excited to hear that the second Astral Throne game, called Age of the Phoenix, was officially announced on November 7th! You can already add it to your wishlist on Steam. From what Zero Sun Games has said, it’s going to keep everything I loved about the first game – the awesome teamwork between characters, really unique and challenging fights, and that heart-stopping permadeath – but they’re really focusing on telling a great story this time around. If you’re familiar with games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, you’ll feel right at home with the turn-based battles on the grid maps – it’s going to play a lot like those!

Between challenging, tactical battles reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics, the new game will feature roguelite elements like persistent progression and character relationships that develop over multiple playthroughs. Players will also be able to customize characters with different classes and builds. The story is written by Shami Stovall, a celebrated fantasy author known for novels like Time-Marked Warlock and Frith Chronicles.

Astral Throne 2 Targeting 2026 Release, Demo Coming Soon

Currently, Astral Throne 2: Age of the Phoenix is only confirmed to be releasing on PC, specifically through Steam. While other platforms aren’t entirely off the table, the first Astral Throne game remained exclusive to Steam, suggesting this sequel might follow suit. Zero Sun Games hasn’t announced a price yet, but based on the original game, it will probably cost around $19.99. The developer, a Canadian studio, is aiming for a 2026 release. They’re finishing a demo in early November 2025 and plan to release it in early 2026. Considering this timeline, a launch in the latter half of 2026 seems more probable than the first half, unless there are unforeseen delays.
