I just stumbled across this new indie game on Steam called Strange Seed, and it’s seriously cool! It’s got that tough-but-fair combat style I love from Dark Souls, but with a really unique twist – you can evolve creatures like in Spore. It’s super new, only has about 46 reviews right now, but everyone who’s played it seems to be enjoying it, giving it a ‘Positive’ rating so far.
Over the past fifteen years, Dark Souls has become a hugely popular and influential action role-playing game, and most gamers are familiar with it. However, Spore is a bit different. Released in 2008 by the creators of The Sims, Spore was a bold and ambitious real-time strategy game focused on creating and evolving creatures. While it received good reviews and sold well initially – two million copies in its first three weeks – it apparently didn’t achieve the success expected of it and has since faded from widespread attention.
Strange Seed Merges The Gameplay of Dark Souls and Spore
I’ve been following Strange Seed since it was announced in June 2023, and I’m so excited it finally came out! It’s a really cool indie game that takes a lot of inspiration from classics like E.V.O.: Search for Eden and Spore, especially when it comes to how creatures evolve. The developers have said they also drew inspiration from the combat in games like Dark Souls and Final Fantasy 14. They’ve been great about keeping fans updated, releasing a demo in September 2024, and eventually partnering with Slug Disco to publish it. Finally, on November 5th, 2025, the full game launched on Steam, and I couldn’t be happier!
In Strange Seed, you start as a tiny blob that’s fallen from a mysterious tree. The goal is to find and defeat the creatures in this vibrant world, taking their DNA to evolve your blob. The game’s combat is inspired by Dark Souls, requiring players to skillfully dodge and dash to avoid enemy attacks, especially from bosses and tougher creatures.
In Strange Seed, players can collect DNA from defeated enemies and use it to grow new body parts. These parts improve your character’s abilities and unlock special powers, adding a Metroidvania-style exploration element to the game. For example, you might grow wings to reach new areas or shrink down to fit through tight spaces. With 40 different creatures to collect DNA from and seven customizable body part slots, there are over 10 million possible character combinations.
Players generally enjoy Strange Seed, especially its unique creature evolution and easier-than-usual Soulslike combat. While some say it still feels a bit unpolished, the developers have already released three updates since the game launched on November 5th to address these issues. Right now, you can get Strange Seed for $13.49—10% off its regular price—until November 19th.
