New Switch 2 Patent Suggests Joy-Con Controllers Can Be Rotated

Since Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 a month ago, there’s been an anticipation among fans about the features and improvements they might see in the successor to the widely loved Nintendo Switch gaming console.

We know its screen will be bigger, and the internal hardware is reportedly on par with a PS4 Pro.

Now, we’re learning more about what to expect from Nintendo’s newest console.

As reported by VGC, a recently filed patent indicates that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 could allow users to flip its Joy-Con controllers over and connect them to the device’s opposite port instead of the standard one.

The Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons are limited to being used on a single side, as I discovered when I attempted to attach them to the opposite side and found it impossible.

Here is an excerpt from the official patent:

The user can operate the game system by placing the right controller on one side and the left controller on the opposite side to the central device. In this configuration, the user can use the game system in a way that makes it more convenient for them. For instance, the user might position the main body device so that the top and bottom sides face each other, enabling them to connect their headphones to the voice input/output port on the underside of the main body device from the most comfortable angle. This means that the user can insert their earphones into the port in a way that suits them best.

A Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Will Take Place This April

Nintendo has been silent since the big reveal, but we’ll hear more about Switch 2 this spring.

On April 2, 2025, at 9:00 AM Eastern Time, a Nintendo Direct presentation is planned, where we expect to hear about the Nintendo Switch 2. While it’s confirmed that a new Mario Kart game will be showcased, specifics regarding other software have been kept under wraps so far. Fortunate fans in various cities around the globe will get an opportunity to try out the Nintendo Switch 2 at special experience events held in those locations.

At its debut, the system should enjoy robust backing from external parties. It’s rumored that Microsoft is readying some high-profile games, such as “Halo: The Master Chief Collection” and “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024,” among others.

In addition to other games, we anticipate that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will also be revealed.
