New Switch Exclusive Looks Straight Out of Classic Pokemon Games Era

RedDeer Games has announced Doki Monsters: Quest, a new RPG for the Nintendo Switch inspired by classic Pokemon games. It aims to capture the feel of those older titles while adding improvements for a better player experience.

RedDeer is a Polish game developer established in 2018. They primarily create games for the Nintendo Switch – four out of their eight original titles are only available on that console. Based in Warsaw, RedDeer also publishes games from other developers and creates other software, including a helpful set of tools for the Switch called nOS: New Operating System.

Doki Monsters: Quest Revealed, Promises Nostalgic Monster-Catching Adventure

RedDeer’s new game, Doki Monsters: Quest, is a creature-collecting RPG for the Nintendo Switch that aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia. The game features a large, interconnected world with over a dozen towns and more than 140 unique creatures to collect, train, and evolve. The name ‘Doki’ (ドキ) comes from a Japanese word that represents the sound of a heartbeat, specifically the feeling of excitement. Visually, Doki Monsters draws inspiration from animals and mythology, offering a different style than the Pokemon series.

Doki Monsters: Quest Looks Like a SNES Pokemon Game That Never Was

RedDeer’s Doki Monsters: Quest looks and feels like a classic Pokemon game from the Super Nintendo era. It plays similarly to the Pokemon games from the second generation, but includes modern improvements like the ability to speed up battles, a quest log to help you keep track of things, and multiple save slots. The main story is expected to take around 20 hours to complete, and RedDeer is also adding side quests and activities, such as fishing. Players will travel between towns through diverse environments like mountains, seas, caves, and shrines. You can see a full overview of the game’s map around the 33-second mark in the reveal trailer.

RedDeer recently revealed Doki Monsters: Quest, but hasn’t announced when it will be released, only saying it’s coming “soon.” Historically, RedDeer hasn’t released its exclusive Nintendo Switch games in November or December, with AAA Clock 2 being the exception. Considering this pattern and the current lack of a firm release date, it’s unlikely Doki Monsters: Quest will be available before the first six months of 2026.

Doki Monsters: Quest Confirmed Gameplay Features

  • Approximately 20 hours of gameplay across more than 15 towns.

Currently, Doki Monsters: Quest is only confirmed to be released on the Nintendo Switch, and it might stay that way permanently, considering the developer RedDeer’s history. While RedDeer hasn’t announced how much the game will cost, their previous games suggest a price between $10.99 and $29.99. Several other monster-collecting games are also coming to the Switch, including Monsterpatch, a game funded by fans that combines elements of Stardew Valley and Pokemon.
