Summary
- THE GHOST IN THE SHELL is set to broadcast in 2026, revealing new staff members for the project.
- The upcoming adaptation marks the fourth version of Ghost in the Shell.
- Staff includes Moko-chan, Space Dandy scriptwriter Toh Enjoe, and character designer Shūhei Handa.
On Saturday, a fresh trailer unveiled the key personnel behind the creation of Science SARU’s forthcoming television anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s iconic work, “Ghost in the Shell,” tentatively scheduled for broadcast in 2026. This exciting news was initially shared back in May 2024. At that time, it was announced that Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, Science SARU, and Production I.G were collaborating on this series as part of the production committee. As an observer, I can hardly wait to see what they’ll bring to life!
The latest preview for the series is a silent video montage showcasing numerous snippets from its production stages, spotlighting each key team member and then reconfirming the scheduled release date of 2026. However, Science SARU’s new Ghost in the Shell cast members are yet to be unveiled, and it is unfortunate that Atsuko Tanaka, who famously voiced Major Kusanagi Motoko in previous iterations, passed away in August last year.
In terms of anime adaptations, the latest THE GHOST IN THE SHELL represents the fourth rendition when compared to those created by Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, and Kazuchika Kise. However, if we break down the series like this: separating GHOST IN THE SHELL and Innocence, categorizing Stand Alone Complex (S.A.C.) into Seasons 1, 2, and Solid State Society, classifying ARISE as a separate series including The New Movie, and dividing SAC_2045 into Seasons 1 and 2, then it counts as the tenth adaptation in total.
Regarding the change in production team, one might also view it as the start of a new era or second phase. Given the age of the original manga, I apologize for any confusion. Nonetheless, I truly hope that this new version will continue to provide an engaging and visually appealing experience.
– Masamune Shirow, original creator, Ghost in the Shell
