As a die-hard film fan, I can’t help but feel my excitement levels soaring with just days left till May 2nd! Marvel Studios has kicked their Thunderbolts promotional engine into overdrive now. Last week, they whisked away most of the cast to Las Vegas for CinemaCon, where they unveiled more glimpses of the film and a behind-the-scenes making-of featurette for us lucky attendees. To top it all off, another tantalizing teaser for this much-anticipated movie has just dropped!
In 2025, it’s the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project that MCU enthusiasts are most eagerly anticipating, and that’s Thunderbolts. Yes, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Daredevil: Born Again have shown that Marvel Studios can deliver on streaming series, but the MCU’s heart is on the big screen. From what we know so far, Thunderbolts looks like it could revitalize the big-screen experience.
Jake Schrier, director of the charming Robot & Frank and a significant portion of 2023’s popular Netflix series Beef, is at the helm for this project. He’s also brought Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, onboard to rework the script originally penned by Eric Pearson, who wrote Thor: Ragnarok.
The cast is stacked with familiar faces like Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and David Harbour, alongside newcomers such as Lewis Pullman and Geraldine Viswanathan. This lineup has Marvel fans buzzing with excitement.
As the deadline nears, Marvel Studios decided to share another sneak peek of Thunderbolts on social platforms, offering a blend of fresh and familiar footage. It remains unclear how the motley crew assembled by Bucky will tackle the powerful Sentry or Void, but these anti-heroes are certainly giving off strong Avengers vibes in their endeavor.
The Thunderbolts* (Or Whatever They’re Called) Are Going To Save The Day, People
The opening scene finds Bucky expressing concern about a significant danger, hinting at the Sentry and/or Void, as they turn individuals into puffs of dust. In comparison, the Chitarui invasion from ‘The Avengers’ didn’t result in such gruesome disintegrations. Yelena argues that Bucky is targeting the wrong group, stating they have all committed wrongdoings. At one instance, John Walker sarcastically questions if the team has completed their therapy sessions yet.
The trailer culminates with Bucky stating, “We might be the ones arriving to turn things around.” Despite the Marvel Cinematic Universe managing fine without an Avengers team since 2019, it’s evident that when a threat becomes overwhelming, a group is necessary to restore balance. However, whether the Thunderbolts (or possibly the Dark Avengers) will serve as the long-term solution isn’t yet determined; this will only become clear once the dust settles on the MCU following Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Thunderbolts* is set to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.
