Amazon’s online game, New World: Aeternum, will no longer be playable after January 2027, marking the end of its run. The game is no longer available for purchase, but players who already own it can continue playing and exploring the world of Aeternum until then.
I remember when New World first came out back in September 2021 – it was Amazon’s first big attempt at an MMORPG. The game took place on this cool, mysterious island called Aeternum, and it had a really interesting vibe, blending colonial exploration with some spooky, almost biblical themes. I spent a lot of time gathering stuff, trying out different weapons, and getting into faction wars with other players. Before they released it on consoles in 2024, they changed the name to New World: Aeternum. Honestly, even though the world was really intriguing and it was an open-world game, it got pretty mixed reviews on Steam – a lot of people weren’t super impressed.
Say Goodbye to New World: Aeternum in 2027
Despite initially attracting over 913,000 players on Steam, Amazon Games is shutting down its MMORPG, New World: Aeternum, on January 31, 2027, just over five years after it launched in 2021. The game has been removed from all digital stores and is no longer available for purchase, though existing owners can continue playing until the servers are turned off. Amazon won’t be adding any new content or merging servers, but will still provide essential bug fixes and maintenance. Players can no longer buy in-game currency called Marks of Fortune, and those already purchased won’t be refunded. However, world bosses and special bonus events will continue until the game’s final day.
Okay, so it’s official – New World: Aeternum is shutting down. It’s been almost three months since Amazon Games first hinted things weren’t going well, but now we have a date. They said back in October that Season 10 and the Nighthaven update would be the last content drops, and they’d give us at least six months’ notice if they decided to pull the plug. Well, they’ve actually given us over a year! The servers will be permanently shut down in just over a year. If you want a refund, you’ll need to contact customer support for whatever platform you bought the game on.
New World: Aeternum’s Fate Might Have Been Sealed Months Ago
As a fan, it was really disappointing to see New World: Aeternum shut down, but it turned out to be part of a bigger issue at Amazon. Late in 2025, Amazon announced they were laying off a huge number of people – over 14,000 corporate jobs! Unfortunately, Amazon Games was hit especially hard, with significant cuts to staff at their studios in San Diego and Irvine. While they didn’t publicly say exactly how many gaming jobs were lost – including at Twitch and other related companies – it was clear that Amazon was scaling back its game development and publishing teams quite a bit.
Even though popular MMOs like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 will continue to operate, the shutdown of New World: Aeternum in 2027 is a disappointing loss for the genre. While Amazon Games will still publish Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty internationally, it remains to be seen what the lasting impact of New World: Aeternum‘s closure will be.
