New World: Aeternum Players Receive Update About the Game’s Future

Amazon has decided to stop updating and will likely shut down the servers for New World: Aeternum. The game, which launched in 2021 and was once a popular MMORPG on Steam, has seen a decline in positive reviews recently.

As of today, New World: Aeternum is getting a lot of negative reviews on Steam, likely because of a coordinated effort following some disappointing updates. However, it’s worth remembering that this Amazon Games title was once hugely popular, with over 910,000 players online at its peak.

New World: Aeternum Support Is Ending

The developers of New World: Aeternum have announced they won’t be releasing any more major updates for the game. The recent Season 10 and Nighthaven update will be the last content added to the PC and console versions. While the game’s servers won’t be closing right away, the team promises players will receive at least six months’ notice before that happens. However, the announcement implies the game is nearing the end of its lifespan. Many players believe this decision is connected to the recent layoffs at Amazon, which impacted around 14,000 employees, including those working in Amazon’s gaming departments.

Amazon is using more artificial intelligence throughout its business, and reports suggest this has led to thousands of job losses. Although Amazon hasn’t officially said so, the recent decision to end support for the game New World: Aeternum seems connected. An internal company message revealed Amazon Games will be focusing less on large, ambitious projects like major online role-playing games. Many fans believe the game’s shutdown is a direct consequence of these broader company changes and layoffs.

New World: Aeternum is still playable and available for purchase on most platforms, but it’s no longer available to buy on Steam. Players with PlayStation Plus Extra or those using the Microsoft Store can still access the game. To address player concerns, Amazon Games is offering the Nighthaven and Rise of the Angry Earth DLC for free to all PC players. Despite this, the game is receiving negative reviews, and its overall score is dropping.

We don’t yet know when Amazon Games will officially shut down the servers for the game. However, October 28th definitely marked the end of New World: Aeternum, and that’s likely disappointing news for many fans of online multiplayer games, even those who didn’t play it often.
