As a die-hard DC fan who has grown up with the tales of these iconic characters, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about Deathstroke. This mercenary villain has always been one of my favorites, not just because of his super soldier powers and martial arts skills, but also due to his complex history with various heroes in the DC Universe.

Although James Gunn and Peter Safran have replaced the DCEU led by Zack Snyder with their new version of the DCU, there are still fans who miss what might have been, and a recent social media post is bound to reignite discussions about it once more.

Deathstroke is one of the most impressive villains in the DC Universe, having the powers of a super soldier and enough skill to go toe to toe with some of the most gifted martial fighters in the comic book franchise. While the character has been featured in several different mediums in opposition to many heroes (most notably the Teen Titans), but the character has never played a significant role in the franchise’s theatrical offerings. This isn’t due to a lack of interest on either side, as evidenced by heaps of fan requests and even Gareth Evans’ experience trying to make a Deathstroke movie under the previous administration. However, the character would get a brief cameo in 2017’s live-action Justice League film, reigniting interest in the character becoming more prominent in mainstream DC projects.

For several years now, we haven’t seen the character back on the big screen, apart from occasional hints such as Joe Manganiello updating his Deathstroke profile picture. Lately, storyboard artist Jay Oliva shared a movie storyboard from a canceled Batman solo film, which was meant to celebrate Batman Day in 2024. This sketch, beautifully rendered in greyscale, shows Batman engaged in an intense rooftop fight with Deathstroke, where Deathstroke is armed with one of his signature weapons and delivering a powerful elbow strike at the hero.

In a 2023 interview, Oliva, who collaborated with Zack Snyder on multiple DCEU films and recently on his successful Netflix project “Twilight of the Gods“, shared his admiration for a previously canceled project that was abandoned alongside Ben Affleck’s departure. He stated, “I’ve been involved in many Batman-related projects, but this one stood out because it was going to connect several intriguing Batman storylines that hadn’t been fully explored before.” The film was intended to focus primarily on Deathstroke as the main villain and offer a distinct portrayal of the character, more akin to Matt Reeves’ version in “The Batman” than the epic narratives seen in films like “Justice League“.

Deathstroke is often considered one of DC Comics’ top-tier villains, even surpassing Deadpool in some aspects as a mercenary character. He has extensive backstories with numerous heroes, and ties to organizations such as the League of Assassins, Court of Owls, among others. Fans were excited when it was speculated that a Deathstroke film might replace the solo Batman movie, but this never materialized. The executives at DC Studios had other priorities, like the upcoming shift in direction for the company, instead. It’s relevant to mention that Manganiello wasn’t optimistic about Deathstroke appearing in Justice League after the cancellation of Affleck’s solo Batman film, which was prior to the upheaval at DC Studios.

Although Deathstroke won’t be part of the DCEU any longer due to its discontinuation, he still has a chance to appear in Gunn’s revamped DC Universe. With lesser-known characters and groups such as the Creature Commandos gaining attention and a potential Batman movie still in planning stages, Deathstroke could potentially have a significant role in an upcoming live-action DC film soon. For now, fans can only stay patient and listen for more updates.

The DCEU franchise is available to stream on Max.
