It seems that some of Blizzard’s major franchises could potentially see new installments, however, these may not originate directly from Blizzard itself.
Back in the earlier part of this year, news surfaced that Blizzard had been assessing ideas for a fresh StarCraft title from several prominent Korean game publishers like Netmarble, Krafton, NCSoft, and Nexon since the end of last year.
As reported by South Korean news source MTN, it seems that Nexon, recognized in recent years for creating The Finals and distributing The First Berserker: Khazan, has successfully secured the bid. This win encompasses not only the rights to develop a new StarCraft game but also the distribution rights for a mobile Overwatch game in both Korea and Japan as part of the package.
Within the company, the Overwatch project is being called “Overwatch 3”, and MTN clarifies that this game differs from a typical hero shooter as it falls under the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre instead.
The Next StarCraft Game?
Although it’s clear that the Overwatch project will be based on Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) style, the plans for the StarCraft project remain uncertain and less defined.
The agreement apparently doesn’t restrict the type of game, and though the original StarCraft real-time strategy games have traditionally been highly favored by competitive gamers in Korea, Nexon boasts a remarkably diverse collection of titles.
It’s been revealed that last year, there were indications that Blizzard might be working on a new StarCraft first-person shooter, possibly set in an open world, based on the available job listings.
The StarCraft franchise has had a turbulent relationship with the shooter game category, particularly with the unsuccessful project StarCraft: Ghost. However, could it be possible that a new game developer could attempt to revive this concept and potentially bring it to completion successfully?
As Nexon focuses on creating the upcoming versions of Overwatch and StarCraft, Blizzard is busy developing content for Diablo 4. They recently unveiled their 2025 plan, but there have been some bumps in the road too. The roadmap has faced criticism, along with a delay in Season 8’s release.
At this point, all we can do is stay patient and observe what Nexon plans to unveil for StarCraft. Perhaps introducing a fresh developer could rejuvenate the series, as it has been rather quiet for quite some time now; the last major release was StarCraft: Remastered in 2017, followed by no new game since StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void came out in 2015.
