Lately, whispers have been spreading about game developers readying titles for the upcoming Xbox. The buzz centered around Call of Duty 2026, with speculation it would debut on the next-gen console produced by the tech giant. However, a recent leak hints that this release might not happen and instead, we might see the new Xbox device in 2027 rather than 2026.
It was proposed that instead of a traditional console, the upcoming Xbox might take on a form more akin to a powerful gaming computer, offering fixed hardware that makes it easier for developers to design games.
The End of Consoles for Xbox
Over the past period, Xbox has found itself in a precarious position. The brand has essentially ceded this generation of home consoles to the PlayStation 5, and it’s probably best to write off the Xbox One era at this stage. Lately, an advertising campaign from Xbox suggests that ‘every gaming experience is an Xbox experience,’ implying that owning a console is no longer necessary to be a gamer associated with Xbox.
Previously employed at Xbox, an executive made a statement indicating that Microsoft would halt production of hardware products immediately, if given the option.
On the latest installment of The Xbox Two podcast, reliable source Jez Corden hinted at potential major changes ahead.
As a passionate fan, I’m excited to share the news that instead of launching a complete Xbox console in 2027, Microsoft is planning something truly innovative. Rather than creating a traditional console, they are designing a device that essentially functions like a PC but comes with a user-friendly interface optimized for TV viewing. This new gadget will also boast specific technical specifications tailored to provide an exceptional gaming experience.
Developers will be designing applications specifically for Windows PCs, ensuring they fully comprehend the system’s specifications to optimize their creations tailored to those exact specifications.
Corden also seemed to dismiss the Call of Duty 2026 speculations, stating, “The discussion about devkits is more about the specifications they’ve been instructed to aim for in the next Xbox. I’m quite certain that the new hardware isn’t due until 2027.
Present thinking suggests that the upcoming Xbox model might take on the form of a compact, Windows-driven PC, enclosed within a console-style casing suitable for placement beneath a TV screen.
This device will work seamlessly with various types of accessories and input devices, and it’s expected to feature a ‘toggle mode’ that allows for switching between a gaming setup and a standard Windows environment. In essence, this means you can use it just like a traditional desktop computer when needed, or enjoy it much the same way as a home video game console.
