No Going Back
Based on the events unfolding in the story, it seems we’re nearing the climax. The main character from NieR Automata Ver1.1a, often referred to as the poster girl, has perished. Interestingly, the plot is now centering around A2, who happens to be 2B’s original model. This loop brings us back to where we started. Towards the end of the latest episode, Pod 042 announces that ownership has been transferred to A2, making her an unofficial YoRHa soldier, despite her departure from the organization. What adds intrigue is that A2 cuts her hair after witnessing 2B’s memories through her sword, suggesting she’s paying tribute to the deceased and accepting her new assignment. Despite her disdain for YoRHa, something – or someone – has prompted her to accept this new role.
Stuck in the Past
Previously, it was revealed that the individual Lily knew as No. 2, was actually A2. As 2B shared with A2 prior to her demise, her sword contained all her memories. The last encounter between A2 and Lily took place before the completion of their first joint operation (depicted in episode 6). At that time, Lily believed all her comrades had perished, while it’s assumed A2 held a similar belief. Upon absorbing 2B’s memories, A2 discovered there was someone left she could consider a friend. Furthermore, an earlier monologue and flashback sequence in this episode offered a comprehensive view of 2B’s perspective.
9S gradually broke through 2B’s shell, shifting her allegiance from devotion to her cause and her role as a disposable tool for YoRHa. The carefree spirit, zest for adventure, and wish to explore that 9S embodied began to sway her focus away from eliminating him if he drew near the truth. Instead, it transformed into a mission of keeping him unaware of YoRHA’s secrets. This duality mirrors A2 in some aspects – indicating perhaps a shared trait among No. 2 models. However, they also yearn for companionship.
Internal Atonement
It’s intriguing that A2 doesn’t respond aggressively when 9S approaches her. This is likely due to her becoming accustomed to 9S’s character. However, gamers will recall that in Ending C, she loses her battle with 9S and regrets joining her comrades, suggesting survivor’s guilt. Yet, since she may have encountered Lily, her composed behavior could be due to another motive: a fresh objective. She continues living to fulfill 2B’s mission as per her request to “take care of everyone”.
It’s unclear what drives A2 or even his present character traits at this moment. However, since Pod 042 confirmed the transfer of ownership to him, it’s likely that we’ll discover much more about him as the upcoming episodes unfold.
