Nintendo Claims It Won’t Hike Switch 2’s Price, But There Could Be A Catch

The Nintendo Switch 2 is launching just in time for the busy holiday shopping season, with exciting new games like Donkey Kong Bananza. Nintendo is counting on strong gift sales to boost numbers, but this might be harder if the price goes up. Currently, though, Nintendo seems determined to avoid a price increase.

This week, IGN reported on Nintendo’s financial briefing for the fiscal year ending March 2026. During the meeting, company executives, including president Shuntaro Furukawa and Shigeru Miyamoto, were asked about rising costs for memory chips. Shareholders were concerned that these increased costs could impact profits and potentially lead to higher prices for Nintendo systems. Furukawa responded to these concerns by:

We know the price of materials is going up, but we expect that as we produce more Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, we’ll be able to lower some of the overall costs.

Nintendo is aiming to offset the higher production costs of the Switch 2 by finding savings in other areas, hoping to avoid a price increase for consumers. However, given the current unstable global economy, this is a challenging goal. Nintendo’s president, Furukawa, cautioned that unexpected changes – like shifts in tariffs or other unforeseen events – could force a price change. While many exciting games are planned for the new system, a price increase could negatively impact its success.

Rising Costs, Rising Fears

Pushing people to buy now wouldn’t be well-received. While initial buyers have made the Switch 2 incredibly successful – it broke U.S. sales records, even surpassing the PS4’s launch – many potential customers are hesitant to buy. A major concern for them is the price.

It seems like most people who purchased a Switch 2 also bought Mario Kart World with it. This is likely because Mario Kart World was a major game released alongside the new console, unlike with the original Switch. Bundling it with the console was a smart move, as it helped players avoid paying the full price for the game separately. I experienced this firsthand – it was very difficult to find the bundle in stock when I was looking for it.

As a Nintendo fan, I’m really excited to hear they’re planning to make enough Switch 2 consoles for everyone who wants one! It should be way easier to find one at your favorite store this holiday season, which is awesome. However, the president did mention there’s a small chance the price could go up, and honestly, that’s a little scary. We all saw what happened when Xbox raised the price of Game Pass – it really upset a lot of people, and I’d hate to see that happen with the Switch 2.
