Summary
- Nintendo is ending the Gold Points discount system by March 25, 2025.
- Players can still earn Gold Points from pre-orders and old game cartridges.
- The future of the Gold Points system may be revealed in the April 2025 Nintendo Direct.
Nintendo is discontinuing their Gold Points discount program, signifying their transition into the era of the Nintendo Switch 2.
During the Nintendo Switch era, Gold Coins were introduced. These coins could be accrued by individuals with a Nintendo Account in two ways: either by purchasing games from the Eshop, or by registering physical game copies. The value of these Gold Coins was equivalent to money, which could then be utilized to buy or discount digital games.
It’s unfortunate to note that one of the standout features on Nintendo Eshop, the Gold Points system, is set to be phased out. According to an announcement on the My Nintendo website, this change will take effect as early as March 25, 2025, meaning players will no longer accrue Gold Points after that date.
Nintendo Is Discontinuing The Gold Points System

Starting from March 25th, you won’t receive Gold Points, but you can continue to accumulate them by pre-ordering games that are yet to be released, provided your pre-order was submitted prior to the specified deadline.
gold points can also be gained from any Nintendo Switch game cartridge that was launched prior to March 25th. In Europe and South Africa, you have a two-year period to redeem these points, while elsewhere, the redemption window is one year.
Fortunately, players have up to a year from their redemption date to utilize their Gold Points, so they can continue to purchase discounted items on the Nintendo eShop.
Fans are currently wondering if this move is indicative of a broader change in Nintendo’s online approach, or if it could be connected to the impending launch of the Switch 2.
According to Nintendo’s confirmation, the Switch 2 will be able to play older games, but there might be challenges ensuring everything fits within the same online store. Fingers crossed that the April 2025 Nintendo Direct provides clarity on whether Nintendo Points will be swapped for a new reward system instead.
