The updated Nintendo Switch 2 now offers five additional games in its library of playable titles from previous generations, thanks to a recent system update. Backwards compatibility has been a significant advantage for the Nintendo Switch 2, as it allows players to access a growing number of games from its predecessor’s hybrid console lineup.
In January, Nintendo confirmed that the new Switch 2 would have backward compatibility features, allowing it to play both physical and digital versions of games designed for the initial Switch model. However, some games will not be supported. After its launch on June 5, the new console already had access to a wide range of Switch games. A mid-July update added or rectified the availability of 25 more titles, including the MMO adventure game “Sky: Children of the Light” and the puzzle platformer “Portal 2”.
Switch 2’s Newly Fixed Backwards-Compatible Games
- Cotton Reboot High Tension
- D.C.III: Da Capo III – Plus Story
- DarkStar One: Nintendo Switch Edition
- Disgaea 7
- Vagante
Nintendo Switch Edition,” “Disgaea 7,” and “Vagante.” As reported by Nintendo Everything, the list of new games isn’t particularly lengthy compared to the mid-July update, but it does feature some exclusive Japanese releases like “DCIII: De Capo III – Plus Story” and “Cotton Reboot! High Tension!” This expansion allows Western fans to enjoy three additional Switch 2 compatible games without encountering any technical issues.

Among the notable entries is “Disgaea 7”, a strategy RPG that debuted in 2023, although it’s less well-known in Western regions. It shares some characteristics with Atlus’ “Persona” series, such as its anime-style aesthetics, mythological themes, and monster taming, but its gameplay is more akin to “Final Fantasy Tactics”. Additionally, action platformer “Vagante” by Nuke Nine and the Nintendo Switch version of “DarkStar One”, a space trading and combat simulator initially released in 2006 and remastered for the Switch in June 2024, are also included in the Switch 2 collection.
For Switch 2 users in its initial phase, backwards compatibility has proven significant as the launch library for Switch 2 has been somewhat disappointing to some. However, since the console’s debut about two months ago, “Donkey Kong Bananza” has emerged as one of the top-rated games of 2025 across all platforms, and Nintendo enthusiasts have much more to anticipate in the upcoming year, with titles like “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”, “Octopath Traveler 0”, and “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” being notable highlights.
