It’s been disclosed that Nintendo recently got hold of their third patent aimed at preventing the development of Palworld, and it seems they’re on the verge of receiving a fourth one as well.
As a passionate follower of gaming news, I’m excited to share that, as per a recent report by GamesFray, Nintendo has expanded its anti-Palworld patent portfolio to include three patents. The first two were mentioned in an earlier update, and the latest one, patent number 12,246,255, was granted on March 11, 2025. This patent focuses on seamless transitions between flying and ground-based travel elements within their games.
Adding to the intrigue, Nintendo’s request for an interview with the patent examiner has been approved, suggesting that a fourth patent might be coming our way soon. This news certainly adds another layer of excitement to the gaming community as we eagerly await more updates from Nintendo!
What do Nintendo’s Anti-Palworld Patents Mean for Pocketpair
It appears that Nintendo may soon hold four patents in the U.S. that could potentially lead to a legal action against Pocketpair. The most recent patent was initially submitted in September 2022, but Nintendo has made adjustments to it over time, even after Palworld’s release.
The conversation between Nintendo and the USPTO examiner went well. As a result, they were able to strengthen some of their original and dependent patent claims by adding more specific requirements. They also decided to discard two claims entirely and made minor adjustments to another one. Furthermore, an additional claim has been proposed by both Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, focusing on player interactions with characters that can either be battled or captured.
GamesFray speculates that it’s quite probable that Nintendo and The Pokemon Company might lodge a patent infringement suit in the U.S., but it’s not definitive. The outcome in Japan could potentially influence this, leading to the possibility that the legal action may never occur.
