In the United States, Nintendo along with The Pokémon Company have been granted a fresh patent that may bolster their ongoing legal dispute with Palworld.
As per a report by Games Fray (through Gamerant), Nintendo and the Pokemon Company have recently been granted U.S. Patent No. 12,220,638, which aids them in countering Palworld in various countries. To grasp the new patent, players are recommended to first familiarize themselves with a prior patent that was published on December 31, 2024.
On December 31, 2024, U.S. Patent No. 12,179,111 was purchased by Nintendo. In the patent, Nintendo detailed two modes: the first mode allows players to catch characters using an item, while in the second mode, a combat character is set free to fight against the field character. It’s been suggested that Palworld may have adjusted how Pal Spheres operate within the game during the time when Nintendo was publishing this patent, as all parties were notified about it one month before it was made public.
On February 11, 2025, Nintendo secured U.S. Patent No. 12,220,638, which bears a strong resemblance to one they published late last year. However, this patent employs slightly different terminology; for instance, “field character” has been changed to “virtual character,” and “catching items” is now referred to as “obtaining items.” Furthermore, a display indicator for the probability of success in acquiring a virtual character was introduced. Notably, any references to the first and second modes were omitted in this patent.
The new patent by Nintendo seems to strengthen their case against Palworld in their ongoing legal dispute. By initially claiming a lack of distinct “first mode and second mode” in Palworld, Nintendo argued that there was an infringement in the first patent. In this new patent, Nintendo has eliminated the division between these modes and introduced terms like “virtual character” and “acquiring items,” potentially bolstering their claim of patent infringement.
Furthermore, Nintendo and the Pokemon Company are persistently countering Palworld’s challenge. To address the dismissed allegations, they have scheduled an interview with the patent evaluator for February 8, 2025, through their legal representative.
