Several creators have noticed that Nintendo has taken down some of their levels in Super Mario Maker 2. Nintendo says they removed the levels because they contained advertising. Super Mario Maker 2, which came out on Nintendo Switch in 2019, lets players build and share their own courses using familiar Mario power-ups, enemies, and themes.
It’s been several years since the game first came out, and Nintendo has mostly shifted its focus to other projects. While Super Mario Maker 2 on Nintendo Switch has received a few updates over time, it hasn’t seen significant new content recently. The game continues to thrive thanks to its dedicated player community, who create challenging levels and unique experiences.
Why Nintendo is Deleting Super Mario Maker 2 Levels
Popular Super Mario Maker 2 creators, like DGR and PangaeaPanga, are reporting that Nintendo is deleting thousands of levels. The issue appears to be the use of hashtags within the game, many of which direct players to a Discord server called Team Shell. Nintendo considers these hashtags “advertising” and is removing levels that use them. While Nintendo is generally hesitant to limit online content, the Super Mario Maker community suspects this isn’t a standard moderation decision.
Many Super Mario Maker 2 players believe someone is repeatedly reporting levels just to get them taken down, though this hasn’t been confirmed. This would explain the recent wave of level deletions after so long. Players are frustrated because the game’s community keeps it popular, even though Nintendo doesn’t add much new content. Over 26 million courses had been created by 2021, and that number has probably increased a lot since then.
Even if only one person is causing the problem, it appears players of Super Mario Maker 2 have few options. Nintendo’s reporting system can be misused, which is frustrating for dedicated fans. While Nintendo may no longer actively update the game, passionate players are still spending a lot of time creating and sharing levels. YouTuber DGR suggests that players worried about their levels being removed should consider re-uploading them without hashtags, as this might help preserve them if another false report is filed.

Fans are hoping Nintendo updates Super Mario Maker 2 for the upcoming Switch 2. Several Switch games have recently received visual and performance improvements, along with new content, and Super Mario Maker 2 would be a great fit for an upgrade – especially if it included support for using the Joy-Con controllers as a mouse. While a third game in the series would be even more exciting, offering even more course creation tools, players can still enjoy the many levels already created and shared by the Super Mario Maker 2 community.
