As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and anticipation upon hearing the news about Monolith Soft becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nintendo. Since the release of Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii back in 2010, this studio has been a beacon of innovation and creativity within the JRPG genre.
Xenoblade Chronicles developer Monolith Soft is now a wholly-owned subsidy of Nintendo.
As a gaming enthusiast, I just learned that Nintendo has finally grabbed the remaining shares of Monolith Soft, a move they’ve been planning since 2005 when they initially bought 80% from Bandai Namco. This news, first reported by Automaton Media, feels like a significant step in Nintendo’s strategy to strengthen its grip on the gaming industry!
Before completing the full acquisition, Nintendo had already owned 96% of the shares, with 80% acquired in 2007 and an additional 16% obtained from Bandai Namco in 2011. The remaining 4% were held by the company’s founders Hirohide Sugiura, Tetsuya Takahashi, and Yasuyuki Honne.
It’s uncertain exactly when this business transaction occurred. Nevertheless, by February 2024, Sugiura, Takahashi, and Honne were still holding 4% of the company’s shares, indicating that it likely transpired recently within the previous few months.
Looking ahead, it’s anticipated that things will carry on much as they are. Nintendo has held a significant share of the studio for quite some time now, and this pattern is expected to persist. However, this means that for the first time since its establishment in 1999, the original founders won’t hold any formal ownership stake in the company.
Beyond working on the Xenoblade Chronicles series, Monolith Software has also lent a hand in the development of other popular titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD (or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom when it’s released).
