The library of games is constantly expanding, with Pokémon Legends: Z-A being the newest addition. Players can also revisit classic games from the Game Boy and N64 through the Nintendo Switch Online service. And with the recent, and somewhat unusual, addition of Virtual Boy games, plus a newly discovered patent, it looks like Nintendo has even more exciting things planned for the future.
Nintendo DS Games May Be Next for Nintendo Switch Online With New Patent
Great news for Nintendo Switch Online members! It’s confirmed the Nintendo DS is coming to the service. A recently discovered patent reveals how Nintendo plans to handle the dual-screen functionality on the next Switch console. There will be three options: a true dual-screen experience with a ‘parent’ and ‘child’ screen, a single-screen mode, and more.

A user named MikeOdysseyYT recently found a Nintendo patent that suggests the Switch could get a second screen during gameplay. The patent images illustrate different ways this could work, including picture-in-picture and a full dual-screen setup. While it might be for new game features, many believe Nintendo is exploring a way to let players enjoy classic Nintendo DS games on the Switch.
The Nintendo DS was loved for its many great games and innovative gameplay. If rumors are true, it will be exciting to see how this translates to a modern experience. Many DS games cleverly used the handheld’s second screen for things like maps or quick access menus, as seen in Pokémon. Considering these new games will likely be Nintendo-owned titles, we can expect some visual adjustments, similar to what they’ve done with other games on the Nintendo Switch Online service.
