On August 7th, a patent lodged by Nintendo in February 2024 for a Joy-Con controller accessory was disclosed and gained popularity on social media. The recent Nintendo patent suggests that Nintendo might be exploring a hand crank attachment for the Joy-Con controllers; however, it remains uncertain whether this idea will progress into actual production.
In a possible update, the Joy-Con accessory might incorporate a sensor for mouse-like operations, working harmoniously with the mouse sensors built into the sides of the Switch 2’s controllers. Currently, the Joy-Con 2 controllers can be utilized in mouse mode for certain games, such as Mario Paint on the SNES Nintendo Classics app. Future games like Drag X Drive and Metroid Prime 4: Echoes will also accommodate the Switch 2 Joy-Cons in mouse mode; while using mouse mode is optional in Metroid Prime 4: Echoes, it’s a requirement for Drag X Drive.
Nintendo Files Patent for a Hand Crank Controller Attachment
Although some Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con accessories have received varying feedback, a new patent suggests that Nintendo is still working on improving these accessories. According to GameSpot’s report, the patent illustrates an attachment designed to attach to the side of a Joy-Con controller, though it remains unclear if this is for the original Switch or the upcoming Switch 2 Joy-Cons. The patent also reveals a hand crank feature that extends from the side of the attachment and offers full rotational movement. This hand crank would interact with a mouse sensor, enabling games centered around fishing or including fishing mini-games to utilize this accessory as an alternative control method. Additionally, the hand crank can be detached and reattached as necessary.

While fishing controllers have often been utilized as alternative options in different games, smaller gaming companies have emphasized hand cranks as a key feature in their products. For instance, the portable console called Playdate comes equipped with a compact hand crank connected to its main body for compatible games. The innovative Playdate was developed by Panic, publishers of popular indie titles such as Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game.

It’s important to remember that a patented design doesn’t necessarily guarantee the production of new items. So, while Nintendo has patented some Joy-Con controller accessories, it’s unclear at this point whether these will actually be manufactured and made available for purchase. With Nintendo consoles and peripherals currently experiencing price hikes, one can only speculate about their future plans regarding Joy-Con controller accessories.
