Nintendo intends to continue making movies based on its video games, and a recent sales report suggests we’ll be seeing even more of them in the future.
For years, turning video games into movies was considered a recipe for disaster in Hollywood. Attempts, whether animated like Final Fantasy or live-action like Max Payne, rarely succeeded. But the 2020s have changed everything, with huge hits like Sonic the Hedgehog, Fallout, Arcane, and The Last of Us. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, from Illumination, was a particularly big success, earning over a billion dollars worldwide. With a Mario sequel and a live-action Zelda film in the works, this trend shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
Nintendo Involved in Multiple Movies Based on Company IP in Development

As a huge Nintendo fan, I was so excited to read the latest sales report! It sounds like the Switch 2 is doing really well, but what got me most hyped was hearing about their future plans. Nintendo is really going all-in on multimedia, especially movies! They’ve got multiple projects in the works based on their existing games, which is amazing. They didn’t say which franchises they’re working on yet, but they hinted we’ll start seeing things roll out after the new Legend of Zelda movie comes out in 2027. Seriously, I can’t wait!
Nintendo isn’t just letting others make movies based on their games – they’ll be deeply involved in every step, from funding to production. Their successful partnership on the Mario movie showed that having the original creators involved leads to a better result. It’s exciting to think about what’s next for Nintendo movies – they’ve hinted at making some themselves, but they’ll also continue to license their properties. This means we could see movies based on series like Metroid or Animal Crossing in the future.
