Nintendo Releases Second Switch 2 Update for July 2025

The latest OS update version 20.3.0 for both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 model can be downloaded now. Although this update doesn’t come with major new features, it is said to reset at least one user-facing setting on the Switch 2.

As a dedicated fan, I can share that the latest Nintendo console is essentially an enhanced version of its predecessor, running on the same system software. Officially known as the Nintendo Switch System Software and nicknamed Horizon, this operating system has gone through multiple updates since the launch of the Switch 2 on June 5.

Moving forward, an update for the Switch OS was released on July 28th and can be downloaded on the most recent models of Nintendo consoles – the first and second generations. Labeled as version 20.3.0, this patch comes with a single entry in its changelog: enhancements to system stability. Nintendo didn’t share additional details, but they did mention that these changes aim to boost the overall user experience for both the original Switch console and the Switch 2.

New Switch 2 Update Reportedly Changes HDR Settings

Initial responses on social media indicate that the July 28 OS update might incorporate unlisted modifications. Some users have noticed that their Switch 2’s HDR settings seem to have been altered after the update, but opinions are divided as to whether this change has enhanced or degraded image quality. Users who suspect that the console now handles HDR output less efficiently when docked can adjust it by accessing System Settings, moving to the Display tab, and selecting the “Adjust HDR” option at the bottom. This feature enables manual color balance adjustments for an HDR image displayed on a compatible TV or monitor.

Above the selected option in the Display interface, you’ll find a dropdown menu labeled “HDR Output.” Many Switch 2 users might prefer to set this to “Compatible Software Only” instead of having it active for every game. The default setting may cause colors in older games that weren’t designed with high dynamic range to appear washed-out, overexposed, or unattractive.

The patch version 20.3.0 marks the second software update for the Nintendo Switch in July 2025, making it the fourth since the console was released in early June. The last update for the Switch 2 (version 20.2.0) reportedly reset the brightness setting, but this issue seems to be either unintentional or related to an underlying adjustment not found in the current patch, as the console’s brightness slider remains unaffected after updating to version 20.3.0, according to Game Rant’s tests. Given Nintendo’s update frequency, it is expected that several more updates for the Switch 2 may be released before the end of 2025.
