Nintendo Says It Will Support Switch If There’s A Demand

The original Nintendo Switch won’t stop receiving support simply because a new version, the Nintendo Switch 2, is coming out. During their Q3 FY2025 earnings meeting on Tuesday, Nintendo stated that they plan to keep providing support for the console if there’s still demand for it.

On Tuesday during their earnings call, I learned that Nintendo shared some insights about the Nintendo Switch’s performance as a gaming platform. Excitingly, they announced that the console has now sold over 150 million units, which is just a hop away from the PlayStation 2’s impressive 160M mark. However, there was also some less encouraging news: sales have been dropping faster than Nintendo anticipated. As a result, they had to adjust their projected operating profit by 22%, mainly because Switch sales dropped by a significant 30% during the quarter.

According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, he doesn’t think that the announcement of the Switch 2 has caused a decrease in sales for the original console.

According to Sankei, he stated that although the hesitation to purchase may not have a significant effect, he believes the product will continue to be strong for its eighth consecutive year. However, he admitted that they were unable to meet their planned targets.

Regarding the original Nintendo Switch, it’s not surprising that Nintendo might continue supporting this console even beyond a few years after its successor hits the market. To illustrate, the Nintendo Wii was released in 2006, but Nintendo maintained online services until May 2014. For the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, they kept online services running up until April 2024. It’s uncertain whether this prolonged online support implies that games will still be coming out for the original Switch two, three, or more years following the launch of Switch 2.
