As a passionate fan, I was deeply invested in the fan-made live-action Legend of Zelda film titled “Lost in Hyrule”. Just a few days after we launched our crowdfunding campaign, Nintendo halted its progress. It’s disheartening to see this happening, especially since there have been numerous unauthorized projects aimed at breathing life into the magical world of Hyrule for years. One such remarkable example is an animated feature based on “Ocarina of Time”, which drew inspiration from Studio Ghibli’s masterful works.

In simple terms, another similar project is “Lost in Hyrule,” an unofficial live-action movie based on the Legend of Zelda series that launched a Kickstarter campaign in early 2025. The story takes place after the events of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, providing an “untold ending” to the Hero of Time’s journey. Director Chris Carpenter will portray Link, while Avi Lake, known for her role in A Series of Unfortunate Events, was chosen to play Princess Zelda, who plays a crucial role in the film. The project aimed to raise $30,000 through Kickstarter, with shooting planned for April 2025, and the completed movie scheduled for release in Fall 2025.

Unfortunately, it appears this project won’t go ahead as planned. In a recent update on their Kickstarter page, the producer of ‘Lost in Hyrule’, Dio Traverso, announced that the project has been terminated due to what seems like a cease-and-desist order from Nintendo. The team behind the movie had anticipated Nintendo might shut it down, and Traverso expressed understanding in his message. He expressed gratitude for backers’ support while mentioning that since the crowdfunding campaign ended prematurely, no funds will be collected. From my gaming perspective, it’s true that a Legend of Zelda movie is being developed at Sony. This epic project is under the direction of Wes Ball and production by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto, the genius behind the Zelda franchise, and Avi Arad, a Hollywood producer renowned for his Marvel films and adaptations of Uncharted and Borderlands. At this point, we gamers are still waiting for more details about the movie.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but marvel at how robust and captivating the Legend of Zelda franchise remains. The recent release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the Nintendo Switch in 2023 has been nothing short of spectacular, shattering sales records and igniting our collective imagination. While whispers of a remake of an older Zelda game are circulating, hinting at potential plans for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console, these rumors remain unconfirmed as of now.
