While Nintendo is primarily concentrating on launching games for the Switch 2, they haven’t forgotten about the original Switch. The original Switch is Nintendo’s most successful console ever, boasting over 100 million owners – and most of them haven’t switched to the new model yet.
The original Nintendo Switch came out in 2017, so players were eager for an updated model when the Switch 2 was released last year. While Nintendo plans to focus on releasing new games for the Switch 2, the original Switch is still getting support – and April 2026 proves it.
Big New Switch 1 Game Release Dates for April 2026
- Pokemon Champions – April 8
- Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream – April 16
Okay, so here’s the deal with Nintendo’s April 2026 releases. It looks like they’re really focusing on the original Switch for now – no big, brand-new Switch 2 games are coming out then. We’re getting Pokemon Champions on April 8th, which is cool, but it’s still a Switch game at heart. It will have some enhancements for the Switch 2, but it’s not being built for the new console. For those who don’t know, Pokemon Champions is a free-to-play battle game kinda like Pokemon Stadium. Then, on April 16th, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is dropping! It’s a really fun life simulation where you basically watch and mess with the lives of Miis on an island. Like Pokemon Champions, you’ll be able to play it on the Switch 2 thanks to backward compatibility, but it won’t be a dedicated Switch 2 version with extra features – no special edition here.

While Pokemon Champions and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream feel like a farewell to the original Switch, Nintendo still has more games planned for it. They’ve confirmed Rhythm Heaven Groove is coming to the Switch 1 only – there are currently no plans for a version on the new Switch 2. As far as we know, Rhythm Heaven Groove will be the last big Nintendo game released for the original Switch, though more announcements are always possible. Though a specific date hasn’t been revealed, recent leaks suggest the game could launch this summer.
There’s a lot of talk that Nintendo will be holding a major Nintendo Direct presentation in June. The event is predicted to heavily feature games for the Switch 2, and some sources suggest we might see a new Star Fox game and a remastered version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. While announcements for the original Switch are possible, don’t expect too much focus on it.
Games like Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Pokemon Champions, and Rhythm Heaven Groove show that the original Switch still has some exciting releases. However, it looks like Nintendo will likely stop releasing major games for it in 2026. If you haven’t upgraded to a newer console but want to play the newest Nintendo games, you should probably consider getting a Switch 2 soon. But even if you don’t, there are still some games coming to the original Switch in April 2026 and after that to enjoy.
