Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch Get System Updates for December 2025

Nintendo updated its Switch and Switch 2 consoles on December 8th with new system software. The update, version 21.1.0, will download automatically on any connected console.

Nintendo recently released new firmware updates for both the Switch and Switch 2, following up on version 21.0.1 which came out two weeks prior. The 21.0.1 update primarily fixed problems that caused error codes (2011-0301 and 2168-0002) to appear during system transfers between the Switch and Switch 2. It also resolved a Bluetooth connectivity issue on the Switch 2 where wireless controllers and headphones wouldn’t reliably connect after the console woke up or Airplane Mode was turned off. While Nintendo also mentioned other general improvements and stability fixes in version 21.0.1, they didn’t provide specific details.

The latest update for both the original Switch and the Switch 2 doesn’t seem to add any new features. Nintendo’s release notes for firmware version 21.1.0 simply state that it improves the overall stability of both consoles. The company hasn’t detailed what problems this update fixes or if any specific bugs were addressed.

Similar to the previous update, the new system software for both Switch and Switch 2 consoles will download automatically when connected to the internet. You can also check for and install updates yourself through the System Settings menu, found by selecting the gear icon on the bottom right of the Home Menu.

A Conclusion To a Busy Year For Nintendo

Nintendo is releasing a new system update after a successful year, which began with the launch of the Switch 2. This new console, the successor to the original Switch, boasts improvements like a larger screen, bigger controllers, and a powerful Nvidia Tegra T239 processor with features like DLSS upscaling. The Switch 2 has quickly become a hit, selling over 10 million units worldwide by late September. Players can enjoy exclusive games such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, and the console also plays games from the original Switch. Several older titles, including Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and Super Mario Odyssey, have even received free updates to utilize the Switch 2’s improved capabilities. It’s currently unknown if more original Switch games will be updated for the Switch 2 in 2026.

Nintendo launched Metroid Prime 4: Beyond alongside the new Switch 2, also making it available on the original Switch. This was a major game release in 2025, and it marked the end of a long development process that began with a first look at E3 2017. After a difficult start and a reboot by Retro Studios, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond reappeared in June 2024 during a Nintendo Direct presentation. The Switch 2 version included enhancements like support for smooth 120hz gameplay on compatible screens and in handheld mode, as well as mouse control using the new Joy-Con 2 controllers.

As we approach 2026, Nintendo continues to support both the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. With games like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave already scheduled for release in 2026, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo maintains this positive trend in the coming year.
