Finally, after months that seemed endless with whispers and guesswork, Nintendo has at last unveiled the next iteration of their popular console: The New Nintendo Switch, or colloquially, the Nintendo Switch 2.
On the firm’s official YouTube channel, we’ve been given our initial, genuine glimpse of the forthcoming console, showcasing newly designed joy-con controllers that snap onto the Switch system instead of slipping in as they did previously.
The screen appears larger compared to the initial Nintendo Switch version, giving off a similar vibe as the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model), introduced in 2021, which boasts a 7-inch display.
It was already confirmed that backward compatibility would be maintained, but it’s reassuring to hear Nintendo reiterate this during their latest announcement. The president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, emphasized that this approach is crucial for the company to ensure the successor of the Nintendo Switch thrives. According to a statement from Nintendo, both digital and physical games will be backward compatible, which likely includes titles available through Nintendo Switch Online. However, some games might not be supported, possibly due to hardware constraints. Games such as Nintendo Labo and 1-2 Switch may not be included in the list of supported games.
What Games Can We Expect for the Nintendo Switch 2?
Today’s unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 primarily focused on the console itself, but we did catch a brief sneak peek at some upcoming games. To be precise, a teaser for one game was shown: none other than the iconic Mario Kart. Although it’s not yet clear whether this is additional DLC for Mario Kart 8 or if it hints at the long-rumored release of Mario Kart 9, more information will be disclosed in due time.
As a dedicated Nintendo enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Nintendo has officially announced a Direct presentation happening on April 2nd, 2025! This event promises to unveil the initial lineup of games destined for the Switch in the near future. Keep your fingers crossed because it’s quite likely we’ll catch a glimpse of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and possibly even a fresh new installment in the beloved Mario series!
Additionally, Nintendo invites fans to experience the Nintendo Switch 2 and its associated games personally in various cities globally this year.
