Summary
- The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal trailer is currently outpacing the 2020 PS5 announcement in terms of YouTube views.
- The video is still slightly behind Nintendo’s 2016 teaser for the original Switch.
Right now, the trailer for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is gaining more initial traction on YouTube compared to the unveiling of the PlayStation 5. This suggests that there’s a lot of excitement building around the Nintendo Switch 2.
After years filled with leaks, whispers, and anticipation, Nintendo delighted fans by revealing their upcoming console – the successor to the Switch – on January 16th. The company showcased their new device in a two-minute video, providing a detailed glimpse of the Switch 2 and hinting at another exciting installment in the Mario Kart series.
In the following three days, the Switch 2 reveal trailer, uploaded onto Nintendo of America’s YouTube channel, gathered an impressive 18.78 million views and more than a million likes. This surpasses the view count of the PlayStation 5 announcement video, which garnered a similar number of likes but was at approximately 18.14 million views three days after its release in mid-June 2020. By early 2025, the PS5 reveal on Google’s video platform had amassed 44 million views and 1.6 million likes. As a result, it appears that the Switch 2 trailer is well on its way to surpassing the total number of YouTube likes for the PS5 announcement in the near future.
Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal Is Still Tracking Behind the Original Switch Trailer
Even though the initial excitement for the announcement of Switch 2 on YouTube surpasses that of Sony’s PS5 unveiling, it still lags behind the viewership of Nintendo’s October 2016 video showcasing the original Switch. This specific trailer garnered an impressive 19.5 million views within merely two days after being posted, although later it was removed from the platform as reported by VGC.
The impressive response to the Switch 2 unveiling video demonstrates the strong eagerness among consumers for Nintendo’s upcoming console. Recognizing this demand, it appears that the company intends to capitalize on this interest by potentially releasing around 20 million units of the Switch 2 within its first year of release. This number represents a 25% increase compared to the original Switch, which faced shortages initially and later during the global pandemic in 2020.
In April, May, and early June of 2025, Nintendo is planning pop-up events worldwide for people to try out their new console. Before these events begin, on April 2nd, there will be a special Nintendo Direct broadcast focusing on the Switch 2. This spring event should provide updated information about the device, including its release date, cost, and initial game offerings. Previous speculation has hinted that the Switch 2 might sell for approximately $449, which represents a 50% price hike compared to the original’s U.S. launch price.
