Summary
- Nintendo Switch 2 will give players access to almost every main series Super Mario game at launch.
- This is thanks to Nintendo Switch Online and backward compatibility.
- Seven main series Super Mario games will not be playable on Switch 2 at launch.
On June 5, when the Nintendo Switch 2 hits the market, it presents a unique opportunity for gamers to experience most of the Super Mario series on a unified platform. Despite not having a fresh, new Super Mario game at its debut, the Switch 2 will include Mario in one of its launch titles. However, there won’t be any new 2D or 3D Super Mario games specifically designed for the Switch 2 on its first day.
The standout debut game for the Switch 2 is called “Mario Kart World“. Despite some debate about its $80 price point, it’s likely that many people who purchase a Switch 2 will choose to buy this game. For those craving a more traditional “Super Mario” adventure, there won’t be a new game available at launch, but they can enjoy a variety of classic games on the system instead.
With the help of ports, the Switch 2 will be able to play most main series Super Mario games straight away. This includes classics like Super Mario Bros., The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, in the 2D style. For those who prefer 3D games, they can enjoy Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and Super Mario Odyssey. This is made possible by the backward compatibility with the Switch 1, and the Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Classics service.

Here are a few things to bear in mind regarding certain Super Mario games for Switch 2: Initially, only the games like Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy can be played on Switch 2 by purchasing the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection at its release. It is also worth mentioning that Super Mario Sunshine will eventually become part of Nintendo Classics, but it won’t be accessible immediately.
At launch of the Switch 2 console, fans may find themselves lacking some popular Super Mario series games such as New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, the initial Mario Maker game, and Super Mario Run. However, considering Nintendo’s history of re-releasing classic DS games through their Nintendo Classics service, it’s conceivable that these DS titles could also be made available on Switch 2. The possibility exists for the Wii and 3DS games to receive remasters or ports as well. It is likely that Mario Maker 2 will render the original Mario Maker obsolete, and given Super Mario Run’s status as a mobile game, it seems unlikely to be ported to the Switch 2 platform.
Nintendo kept the original Switch going for an impressive eight years before unveiling the Switch 2, which suggests that the new console will likely have a considerable amount of time to accumulate classic games in its library. Fingers crossed that by the end of the Switch 2’s lifespan, all the Super Mario series games are easily accessible and collected in one convenient place.
