Nintendo recently updated both the Switch 2 and the original Switch. The Switch 2 now runs version 21.0.1, and the original Switch was updated on November 24th. These updates focus on improving the overall stability of both consoles, without adding any new features.
Nintendo had a significant year in 2025 with the release of the Switch 2 on June 5th. This new console offers a similar hybrid gaming experience to the popular 2017 Switch, and expectations were high. Despite some initial challenges, like debates over the price, the Switch 2 has already sold millions of units. Nintendo continues to release updates to enhance the console as more people buy it.
So, Nintendo dropped a new update on November 24th, bringing the system to version 21.0.1. It’s mostly the usual stuff โ making things run smoother overall โ but a couple of fixes really caught my eye. Finally, they fixed that annoying issue where you’d get error codes when trying to transfer data to a Switch 2 using local wireless. And even better, they resolved the problem where some wireless controllers or Bluetooth headphones wouldn’t reconnect after putting the Switch to sleep or turning off Airplane Mode. Huge quality of life improvements, honestly!
So, my original Switch actually got an update too! It fixes that annoying bug where transferring data could mess up, and it’s supposed to make things run smoother overall. Honestly, those ‘general stability improvements’ are always a bit vague โ I’m not always sure what exactly they change, but hopefully it’s good! Good news is, Nintendo says both my Switch and the new Switch 2 should update automatically. But just in case, I checked the system settings to make sure I was running the latest version.
Nintendo is releasing a system update during a particularly active period. They recently launched Kirby Air Riders on November 20th as a game only available on the Switch 2, bringing a new racing experience from Masahiro Sakurai inspired by the classic GameCube title Kirby Air Ride. Plus, the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, featuring the latest chapter in Samus Aranโs story after a lengthy development process, will be released on December 4th.
Although these games probably won’t drive as many Switch 2 sales as Mario Kart World, it will be interesting to see how they perform. With several new games on the way for Nintendo consoles, it remains to be seen if Nintendo will release any more hardware updates before the year is out.
