Nintendo Switch 2 Has Lots Of Games With Backward Compatibility Problems

Summary

  • Nintendo Switch 2 has issues running old games via backward compatibility.
  • The list of games with problems includes Fall Guys and Fortnite.
  • Nintendo says these issues will be resolved further down the line.

After the initial Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation, Nintendo discreetly published a revised catalog of games that are compatible with the previous versions. It turns out there are quite a few titles experiencing problems running smoothly or even launching correctly.

When Nintendo announced that the Switch 2 would play games from the original Switch console, they noted that a handful of exceptions applied. Many gamers anticipated these to primarily be titles requiring the original Joy-Con controllers, such as Ring Fit Adventure, and assumed the majority of other games would remain unaffected.

It appears that the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 might encounter more compatibility problems with older games than initially thought. According to Kotaku’s recent report, Nintendo has disclosed a list of games that may experience issues running on the new console or may even fail to launch at all.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Isn’t As Backward Compatible As People Thought

Among the Nintendo Switch 2’s initial game lineup that may experience some issues are Fall Guys, Harvestella, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Saints Row IV: Re-Elected, and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. It’s surprising to note that many of these games, despite being part of the launch lineup, are relatively low in terms of technical requirements for the hardware.

Among the Nintendo Switch games experiencing initial launch problems are Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, Doom Eternal, Little Nightmares, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, several versions of The Jackbox Party Packs, and Warframe.

According to Nintendo, these problems may simply be due to some games experiencing issues upon the launch of the system on June 5, 2025. However, Fortnite is an exception, as it’s planned to get a customized version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 at a later date.

It’s somewhat unexpected that the internal components of the two Nintendo Switch consoles aren’t similar enough for full backward compatibility from the get-go, given how swiftly the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S managed it. Fingers crossed that these issues get ironed out before year’s end.
