In their history, Nintendo has often introduced unique and quirky controllers. From the third grip on the Nintendo 64 controller, to the Wii Remote and Nunchuck setup, the unwieldy Wii U Gamepad, Nintendo tends to favor the unconventional over the conventional. The Joy-Con 2s for the potential Nintendo Switch 2 are no exception to this rule.

Initially, the Joy-Con controllers of the original Nintendo Switch were exceptionally innovative for their time due to their detachable nature, transforming into two individual controllers even eight years post-launch. However, these original Joy-Cons had their flaws, such as compact buttons and the troublesome stick-drift, preventing them from achieving true greatness. Now, with the unveiling of the Joy-Cons for the Nintendo Switch 2, we see improvements rather than a complete overhaul.

Every New Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Feature Explained

Magnetic Attachment

As a gamer, I’m super excited about the built-in magnets in the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons, making it a breeze to attach them to the console. Even when I get a bit carried away during intense gaming sessions and try to pull them apart forcefully, they stay put. To detach the Joy-Con 2s from the Switch 2 safely, all you need to do is hold down a new trigger conveniently positioned next to the shoulder buttons on the side of the controller. Easy peasy!

Bigger Buttons

Despite being just as thick as its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts an increased size in both screen area and Joy-Con dimensions. The Joy-Con 2 versions have been extended slightly longer than their original counterparts, providing more space for bigger buttons. In particular, the analog sticks on the Switch 2 are larger, and the SL and SR buttons are substantially wider.

Mouse Functionality

Beyond could allow us to use one Joy-Con as a mouse for precise aiming, while keeping the other for traditional movement control. This dual functionality sounds like it could open up some really interesting gameplay possibilities!

The “C” Button is for GameChat

Initially, when the hints for the Nintendo Switch 2 emerged, one intriguing aspect was the enigmatic ‘C’ button on the right Joy-Con controller. However, these curiosities are no longer a mystery, as the information has been revealed, and it could catch some enthusiasts off guard.

In simpler terms, during the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation, it was highlighted that the “C” button on the Joy-Con 2 controllers is used for a new feature called GameChat. This feature resembles Discord in its functionality as a party system, allowing multiple players to gather in a chat room and communicate using voice (and video if they purchase the Switch 2’s additional camera accessory). The “C” button provides quick access to various functions such as muting the microphone, stopping the video, sharing the screen, and leaving the call.

The GameChat feature on the Nintendo Switch 2 will ultimately necessitate a paid subscription to Nintendo Switch Online; however, it’ll be complimentary to all users until March 31, 2026.
