Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Smashes US Records

The new version of the Nintendo Switch, dubbed as the Nintendo Switch 2, has shattered another record by being the quickest-selling hardware in the U.S., setting a remarkable pace in the industry. After undergoing development for several years, the Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June and swiftly demonstrated its appeal to consumers, resulting in impressive sales figures and numerous achievements for the company.

Nintendo raised the bar significantly with the highly successful Switch 1, selling over 143 million units worldwide by 2024. Consequently, there were high expectations for their next move, and thankfully, the new console lived up to the hype. Unlike its predecessor, which took a significant risk, the Switch 2 opted for a more conservative approach. It introduces some novel features in Joy-Con technology, but essentially, it’s an enhanced version of the original Switch—a more potent system, advanced technology, a refined design, yet maintaining the same aesthetic. Additionally, Nintendo ensured that a diverse lineup of launch games would be available, featuring titles like Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077, and Tears of the Kingdom, among others.

Approximately a month and a half since its debut, the Switch 2 has set another milestone. As reported by Circana, it became the fastest-selling video game console in U.S. history upon release, selling an impressive 1.6 million units within its first month on the market. Furthermore, it was the top-selling console for that month, surpassing the previous record of 1.1 million sales set by Sony with the PlayStation 4.

Moreover, the star game for Switch 2, named “Mario Kart World”, was its top-selling title in June and ranked third overall across all platforms, outperformed only by the newly launched “Death Stranding 2” and “Elden Ring: Nightreign”. Despite initial doubts about the game, around 82% of Switch 2 buyers in June opted for “Mario Kart World”.

Within about a month of its release, the Switch 2 has made a significant impact on both U.S. history and the Japanese market. Data from Japanese retailers indicates that it is now the largest video game system launch Japan has ever seen, selling 1.5 million units, surpassing the Game Boy Advance’s record set in 2001. Furthermore, the Switch 2 has established a new milestone for Nintendo as their fastest-selling console, with sales of 3.5 million units within just four days.

It’ll be intriguing to observe how these figures evolve over the next few months, particularly after the launch of games such as “Donkey Kong Bananza” and the much-awaited “Duskbloods.” Although the Switch 2 is creating quite a stir in the gaming world, its journey has only just started – there are lots of thrilling developments ahead for fans.
