Nintendo Switch 2 Lets You Stop Charging at 90%—Extend Battery Life With One Click

Summary

  • Nintendo Switch 2 will have an option to stop charging at 90% to extend battery life and conserve energy.
  • The feature slows charging speed at around 90% to reduce battery deterioration.
  • Despite the option, the console may still charge to 100% for an accurate battery display.

Nintendo has unveiled an unexpected innovation aimed at prolonging the battery life of the upcoming Switch 2 console. By offering users the choice to halt charging once the device hits 90% battery level, this feature could benefit the longevity of the Switch 2 and save energy, even when it’s connected to a power source.

As we eagerly await the release of Nintendo’s new console, the Switch 2, they have demonstrated several impressive features it will come with right out of the box. Previously, Nintendo unveiled that the Joy-Con 2 controllers can operate in mouse mode on the home screen of the Switch 2, along with compatible games. To use this functionality, users simply need to tilt their Joy-Con 2 controllers sideways and attach appropriate wrist straps. This allows them to navigate and select various options within the Switch 2’s menu system. If desired, users can easily switch the Joy-Con 2 controllers back to their standard position to exit mouse mode.

Despite some concerns about the battery life of the upcoming Switch 2 model, users can take steps to prolong its lifespan by conserving power. A new feature revealed on the Nintendo Today mobile app by Twitter user Stealth40k allows for the system to stop charging when the battery reaches 90%. This functionality is demonstrated in a 27-second video clip shared by Nintendo. To access this battery conservation option, users need to open the System Settings app from the Home Menu, represented by the cogwheel icon. Upon reaching the System sub-menu, they will find a toggle setting labeled “Stop Charging Around 90%”. This feature works whether you’re using your Switch 2 in handheld or docked mode, as long as it is connected to the provided AC adapter for charging.

Nintendo Switch 2 Will Have An Option To Extend The Console’s Battery Life

After increasing from 85% to 88% in roughly 20 minutes, the Switch 2 stopped taking a charge. While this might reduce the amount of playtime for games like “Mario Kart World” in handheld mode, it should help prolong the rate at which the system’s battery capacity degrades over time. However, Nintendo has stated that even with power-saving settings enabled, the console may still reach a full charge to ensure an accurate reading of the battery capacity on display.

As retailers prepare for the arrival of the Switch 2 on June 5, all eyes are on Nintendo’s upcoming console. With its initial features, it’s yet to be determined how many users will opt for the energy-saving mode upon its release.
