Nintendo Switch 2 Release Window Rumors Reinforced by New Report

Nintendo Switch 2 Release Window Rumors Reinforced by New Report

Highlights

  • Some Nintendo partners were reportedly told not to expect the Switch 2 during the company’s current fiscal year.
  • The much-anticipated console hence appears unlikely to hit the market until April 2025, at the earliest.
  • The Switch 2 could have at least a six-month gap between announcement and release due to Nintendo wanting to avoid launch-day shortages that plagued its predecessor in 2017.

As a seasoned gamer with a Nintendo Switch in my arsenal since its debut, I can’t hide my excitement for the upcoming Switch 2. However, recent reports suggest that we might have to wait a bit longer than anticipated – possibly until April 2025 at the earliest. Now, I’ve been patient before (I still remember waiting for hours in line on launch day!), but this seems like an eternity!

Reports suggest that the new Nintendo console, known as the “Switch 2,” won’t hit the market within this ongoing fiscal year, aligning with some whispers about its release timeline in the tech community.

In springtime, Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo, stated that they would reveal details about the Switch 2 within their current fiscal year, which concludes in March 2025. This has led some analysts to speculate that the eagerly awaited console might not hit shelves before the end of the following fiscal year, March 2026, considering Nintendo’s financial projections for the upcoming 12-month period do not suggest any significant increase in revenue expected from a new hardware launch in FY25.

Nintendo Partners Reportedly Told ‘Not to Expect’ Switch 2 Before April 2025

According to Christopher Dring, who leads games B2B at GamesIndustry.biz, new information supporting the theory that Nintendo won’t launch the Switch 2 this fiscal year has been presented. In a recent episode of the GI Microcast podcast, Dring stated that none of the developers he’s spoken to anticipate the release of the Switch 2 within the current fiscal year. Furthermore, some of Nintendo’s partners have allegedly been informed not to expect the console to debut in the near future, suggesting that if the Switch 2 does come out, it might not happen until April 2024 at the earliest.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but feel excited about the rumors swirling around the potential release of the new Nintendo console. Some say we might see it in stores as early as April or May 2025, but Dring cautions that the future remains uncertain. According to a report from Nikkei in February 2024, Nintendo is determined to avoid any repeat of the launch shortages that plagued the original Switch in 2017. They’re even willing to delay the console until they can guarantee a smooth rollout, free from scalpers and stock issues. This ambition stems directly from their experience with the Switch, a lesson painfully learned through those early supply struggles.

Switch 2 Could Have At Least a 6-Month Gap Between Announcement and Release

To ensure there won’t be a scarcity of the eagerly awaited gadget, it would apparently require a considerable amount of time for accumulation. For instance, reports say that production of the Switch started in October 2016 right after its unveiling. Even four months didn’t seem to prevent shortages, so Nintendo might need at least six months between the announcement and launch of their next console, if they haven’t significantly boosted their manufacturing capabilities over the past seven years. However, the company could potentially minimize that duration by starting production on Switch 2 before announcing it, but given the high chance of factory leaks ruining its unveiling, this is unlikely.

During a May 2024 financial discussion, Furukawa hinted that the Switch 2 might resemble its forerunner, indicating it could once again function as a versatile device supporting both portable and docked gaming. There are whispers that this new console will incorporate a custom Nvidia chip named T239.
