Summary
- Nintendo reportedly had nearly 400,000 Switch 2 units imported into the U.S. within days of the console’s January announcement.
- Even more were likely imported in the meantime, together with tens of thousands of standalone Switch 2 Joy-Con charging grips.
- The Switch 2 isn’t expected to hit the store shelves before June 2025.
Approximately 400,000 units of the Switch 2 have reportedly been imported into the United States shortly after the console’s announcement, suggesting that Nintendo might be aiming for a summer release date for this eagerly awaited device.
On the 16th of January, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2, providing a trailer that disclosed its size and some fundamental characteristics such as backward compatibility and versatility to switch between portable and TV play modes, similar to its previous model. The trailer concluded with a pledge for a launch in the year 2025, accompanied by an announcement of a Nintendo Direct on April 2, which will disclose additional details about the system.
Just over three weeks remain until the first Nintendo Direct specifically focusing on the Switch 2. A Famiboards user named LiC may have disclosed additional information about the status of Nintendo’s U.S. stock, based on recently acquired shipping records. According to these documents, HVBG, a Vietnamese component manufacturer, has allegedly shipped approximately 383,000 Switch 2 units into the United States. These shipments were reportedly sent within six days of the Switch 2 announcement, no later than January 22. The company’s stock of consoles in the U.S. might have grown since then, but it may take a few months for shipping data to match up with the current inventory.
Nintendo Is Reportedly Also Building Switch 2 Charging Grip Stock
During the examined timeframe, there appears to be proof that HVBG imported 41,598 Switch 2 Joy-Con charging grips (product code BEE-A-ESSKA). This accessory seems to share a similar label with the original Switch charging grip (HAC-A-ESSKA). While HVBG is generally known for manufacturing components, recent shipping records hint that the devices and charging grips it sent to the U.S. in January 2025 were fully assembled and packaged retail products. This suggests that aside from being a component manufacturer, HVBG might also be handling the final assembly of the upcoming console, at least for the U.S. market.
Switch 2 Joy-Con Charging Grip Will Reportedly Be Sold Separately
In December 2024, LiC announced that HVBG had acquired approximately 800,000 units of a suspected Switch 2 system-on-chip, Nvidia’s T239. Additionally, it was reported that HVBG received even more potential components for the Switch 2 in January of the following year. It appears that the new Joy-Con charging grip will be available for separate purchase, as shipping data suggests.
Nintendo has arranged Switch 2 demo sessions throughout April and May in various locations. The most recent of these demos is taking place in Seoul, and it will end on June 1st. Since these demos are ongoing, it’s likely that the console won’t be launched before they’ve finished. The April 2nd Nintendo Direct could potentially reveal the official release date for Switch 2, along with other updates regarding the device.
