Given that Nintendo has maintained dominance in the handheld gaming sector post the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, it seems prudent for the company to reintroduce the popular StreetPass feature, which thrived during the era of the Nintendo 3DS. Over the past two decades, Nintendo has perfected its gaming hardware, starting from the Nintendo Wii and extending to the original Nintendo DS, culminating in their most successful home console, the Nintendo Switch. This hybrid device, combining both at-home and portable gaming experiences, explains why subsequent Nintendo consoles have followed suit, like the OLED model and the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Even though I was thrilled about the Switch’s emphasis on portability and social gameplay with games like 1-2-Switch and Snipperclips, some of the unique features that made Nintendo’s previous handheld consoles stand out seem to be missing in its latest gaming hardware. Specifically, the StreetPass feature – first introduced and last seen on the 3DS console family – was a significant aspect of social gaming. Now, as we eagerly await the launch of the Switch 2, it might be worth reconsidering the inclusion of the StreetPass feature to enhance our social gaming experience once again.
Nintendo’s StreetPass Feature Was A Unique Selling Point
Previously, the Wii was Nintendo’s most successful console, but its successor, the Wii U, didn’t match that level of popularity. This likely led Nintendo to concentrate on their DS consoles instead, as they had longer lifespans. From the original 3DS console through to its New 3DS and 2DS XL variations, it appeared that for almost a decade, Nintendo emphasized the portable gaming market, while other companies focused more on home entertainment. The StreetPass feature in the 3DS series, which encouraged players to use their consoles outside, helped Nintendo capitalize on the portability and social aspects of the 3DS family.
As a gamer, I can’t help but appreciate the magic of the StreetPass feature on my 3DS. It’s not just about exchanging data with fellow gamers nearby and enjoying the exclusive content of StreetPass Mii Plaza; it’s about enriching the gaming experience in other titles too. For example, in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, I could share my house with passing players via StreetPass. In Pokemon X and Y, every trainer I met using StreetPass granted me PokeMiles. And let’s not forget Fire Emblem: Awakening, where I could send armies to another player’s game for battles, hiring, or trading through StreetPass. Essentially, while 3DS games were playable solo, StreetPass took advantage of the console’s portability to offer a more immersive multiplayer experience.
Cutting StreetPass From The Nintendo Switch Was A Mistake
Instead of naturally carrying over the StreetPass functionality from the 3DS to the Nintendo Switch, given that both console generations support both home and handheld gaming, and the Switch emphasizing portable play and social interaction through its dual Joy-Cons, it’s surprising that this feature wasn’t incorporated into the Switch. Although the intention might have been for Nintendo to focus on novel ideas for the Switch instead of relying on past technologies like StreetPass from the 3DS, the omission still represents a missed opportunity for the Switch family to utilize this feature.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Could Still Salvage StreetPass
With the unveiling of Nintendo’s Switch 2 and an upcoming presentation that might offer insights into its future console, there remains optimism that StreetPass capabilities could be reintroduced. Although Nintendo may continue to refine the Switch’s hardware, as demonstrated by their OLED model, another method to upgrade the Switch 2 would be to emphasize social gaming once more. For example, just like how the exclusive 3DS game Mario Kart 7 leveraged StreetPass for data exchange and ghost racers, the next version of Mario Kart appearing in the Switch 2 teaser could incorporate similar elements by adapting StreetPass functionality to suit the new console.
