Nintendo Switch 2’s Home Menu Gets Mouse Mode for Joy-Con Control

Summary

  • Switch 2 has mouse mode for Joy-Con control on the Home Menu, allowing for new navigation options.
  • The mouse mode uses the Joy-Con controllers in unique ways, like simulating a scroll wheel.
  • Mouse mode will be supported in specific Switch 2 games and apps, offering potential for new gameplay features.

According to a recent video shared by Nintendo on their social media platforms, it has been revealed that the Home Menu of the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 can be effortlessly navigated using the Joy-Con controllers in a mode similar to a computer mouse. The video demonstrates this feature, showing users how they can seamlessly interact with the Home Menu once the Nintendo Switch 2 is officially launched on June 5.

In comparison to its predecessor, the new Switch model – known as the Switch 2 – boasts several improvements. It sports a larger screen and improved graphics capabilities. The updated Joy-Con controllers offer extra features and can accommodate unusual setups, like being attached to the console backwards. Additionally, these revamped Joy-Con controllers, dubbed Joy-Con 2, come equipped with a dedicated C-Button for GameChat. However, the standout feature is mouse mode, which lets users employ a Joy-Con controller much like a computer mouse by placing it flat on a surface and moving it around. Remarkably, both the left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers are capable of operating in this mouse mode.

The potential for developers and gamers using the mouse mode on the upcoming Switch 2 is immense, but even without delving into development, the new feature offers a practical application right out of the box. A recent video from the Nintendo Today app, shared by Twitter user OatmealDome, showcases that the Joy-Con 2’s mouse mode can be used to navigate the Switch 2’s main menu and system functions. Nintendo demonstrated this in a tutorial video, specifically showing how the mouse mode works on the Home Menu using the Right Joy-Con 2 controller as an example. To activate mouse mode, simply attach the wrist strap, turn the Joy-Con on its long side, and the Switch 2 will switch to this mode. The tutorial then showed that you can utilize mouse mode to access the Controllers menu from the main hub of the Switch 2, with the R button simulating a left-click function.

Mouse Mode Can Be Used On The Switch 2 Home Menu

The stick on the right was operated much like a scroll wheel, where tilting it toward your palm imitated scrolling down. Whether or not the ZR button will mimic a right-click isn’t certain yet. Despite retaining some characteristics from the initial Switch, such as gyro controls and Amiibo compatibility, only selected Switch 2 games and applications will offer mouse mode functionality. Some of these games include the competitive wheelchair basketball game Drag x Drive.

Given the projected sales of more than 15 million Switch 2 units in its inaugural year, a significant number of video game enthusiasts are likely to get their hands on the Joy-Con’s latest mouse function soon. It remains to be seen how many games will be designed with this mouse mode in consideration.
