Though primarily designed as a source for free additional games, it has also served as a gateway for players to explore titles that were previously unavailable in the western market.
In early 2024, three previously Japan-only Game Boy Advance “Starfy” games were added to the service, sparking excitement among gamers who look forward to playing titles that weren’t released in Western countries. The vast collection of games from various consoles offered by Nintendo’s Switch Online service has already left a lasting impression.
On Nintendo’s YouTube channel, it was announced that Nintendo Switch Online has expanded its SNES game library with several new titles: Battletoads/Double Dragon, Kunio-Kun no Dodgeball da yo Zen’in Shūgō!, Big Run, and Cosmo Gang The Puzzle. Interestingly, the last three games have also been added to the Japanese Super Famicom catalog, along with Angelique. In case you’re a classic gamer, you might recognize the Kunio-Kun series as the potential origin of the popular Double Dragon franchise. Now, what’s interesting is that an upcoming title in this series focuses on dodgeball sports and was initially released in Japan back in 1993. Just like previous Japan-exclusive games added to Nintendo Switch Online, it appears they’ve kept this game as-is, which could disappoint players due to the non-English text. However, given how user-friendly many of these Kunio games are, language barriers might not be much of an issue for eager players.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m blown away by Nintendo’s ongoing effort to bring timeless classics to the modern era with their Switch Online service.
