As per the most recent financial statement, the Nintendo Switch has moved significantly nearer to the sales milestone of the PlayStation 2, surpassing the 150-million unit mark.
According to Gematsu’s findings, the Nintendo Switch had reached 150.86 million units sold by December 31, 2024, only 10 million short of surpassing the best-selling video game console ever, the PlayStation 2. The Switch launched in 2017 and managed to sell 4.82 million hardware units and an additional 53.7 million units by this time. It’s worth noting that despite these impressive numbers, Nintendo hasn’t yet surpassed the lifetime sales of the DS, with a total of 154.02 million units sold for the latter console.
Best Selling First-Party Nintendo Switch Games
As a gamer, I’ve got to say that Nintendo has been killing it with their first-party Switch games! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to dominate the scene, having sold an impressive 67.35 million units. Following closely behind, we’ve got Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, selling a combined total of approximately 115.94 million units. Super Mario Odyssey wraps up the top 5 with 29.04 million units sold. For those who want to know more about the rest of the top 10 best-selling games for Nintendo Switch, you can find that info in the earnings release.
In addition to unveiling its latest games, Nintendo shared sales figures for them. Switch Sports has been snapped up by 15.74 million players so far. Other newer releases like Super Mario Party Jamboree and Mario & Luigi: Brothership have managed to sell 6.17 million and 1.84 million units respectively. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD have sold 3.91 million, 2.06 million, and 1.80 million units respectively.
Nintendo Revises Forecast Again
In simpler terms, Nintendo reported a drop in both their hardware (9.54 million units, down by 30.6% compared to last year) and software (123.98 million units, down by 24.4% compared to last year) sales. As a result, they’ve adjusted their financial projections for March 2025 once more. This adjustment was based on the sales pattern observed up until December 31, 2024. Both the hardware and software sales forecasts have been revised as well.
Originally, we anticipated net sales of 1.28 billion yen, but now our revised estimate is 1.19 billion yen – a decrease of about 90 million yen. Similarly, our initial operating profit forecast was set at 360 million yen, but it has been lowered to 280 million yen, representing a reduction of 80 million yen. Additionally, we’ve adjusted our ordinary and net profit estimates as well; they were previously at 420 million yen and 300 million yen respectively, but now stand at 370 million yen and 270 million yen respectively, marking a decrease of 50 million yen for both.
